Sony Pulls the Plug on The Boondocks Reboot
'Hopefully, maybe one day we'll be able to revisit. If we don't then that's what that is,' Cedric Yarbrough explained.
It was previously announced, the popular satirical animated comedy The Boondocks was expected to make its return to our small screens soon.
However, per Comicbook.com, star Cedric Yarbrough revealed that the reboot wonât be going forward after all, explaining that Sony Pictures Television decided to âpull the plug.â In a recent interview with the Geekset Podcast, Yarbrough said:
âI hate to say this, but⌠The show is, right now, not coming back. I donât know if this is breaking news, but weâve been wanting to do the show. And Sony, they decided theyâre going to pull the plug. So, I donât know. Hopefully, maybe one day weâll be able to revisit. If we donât then thatâs what that is. But, I wish the show was coming back.â
Yarbrough continues, âTheyâve surrounded us with an amazing cast. Regina King, so brilliant. The  late, great John Witherspoon was fantastic. Gary is killing it. McGruder and Carl Jones are giving us permission to go there. Theyâre like âYes! Improvise. Weâll do the script but you know, fuck around. Do you. Letâs see what you got.â That gave that show the heartbeat. It wasnât just a written show with Black minds. Itâs also a written show with Black arts as well.â
Originally announced at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2019, the new series was touted as a âcomplete reimagining for the modern era.â Witherspoon previously talked about potentially returning for the series to voice Granddad before his passing in 2019. Though it was never confirmed yet whether or not Regina King would return as well, who voices both Huey & Riley Freeman.Â
Considering its wide and loyal fan base, itâll be interesting to see if another studio and platform picks up the groundbreaking series in the near future. We most definitely hope so.Â
