New Group Text
Over time we have had members suggest we have a meeting just for discussion; no speaker. A group text is being put together offering a way to provide communications on days we don't have meetings. Some of the things you can also do include: post events (webinars, etc.), sell or give away items, and keep up to date what is happening.
Problem: There is a limit as to how many can be in a group text and security. I-Phones there is a limit of 10 members, and with Android it's 20. Security is also an issue, while sending a message from one I-Phone to another I-Phone the message is encrypted. However sending a message to an Android encryption isn't possible. Likewise sending a message from an Android to an I-Phone there is no encryption. Add to that text messages are held by your cellphone provider making hacking possible. The providers delete the messages in a time frame they choose.
Solution: A way to fix these problems is to use a secure message service that is encrypted end to end. Whats App is an example of these message services. In looking at using one of these services I have found a few group members use Viber and Telegram.
Signal: Appears to be the best choice, it is run by a nonprofit so there is no reason and they don't collect and sell your data. PC Magazine says Signal is the gold standard in message security. Signal is free to use.
A text/chat group has been set up on Signal. To join the group you will need to set up an account on Signal ( all you need is a phone number) and then contact Alan and request an invitation.
Here is a video that explains how to set up an account and a link to Signal's website. Signal.org
