In 2013 while I was in NYC a documentary came out called 'Finding Vivian Maier'. I meant to go the the cinema to see it but somehow never did. I remember a lot of press about a street photographer called #VivianMaier who had lived her life in obscurity, working as a live-in nanny for numerous families and who photographed thousands upon thousands of frames of different street lives and personal observations. I have just watched the documentary and it as at once astounding: her talent, like #RobertFrank #MaryEllenMark (who appears in the documentary), #HenriCartierBresson and other great, great reportage photographers and astounding the privacy with which she guarded her life until death, in later years displaying behaviour of an increasingly mentally fragile person, in earlier years a sharp, intelligent, observant, fascinated and uncompromising woman. Upon her death the thousands of reels of undelevoped prints and the thousands of negatives were put from her storage unit into a local auction and the rest is history thanks to #JohnMaloof for whom the mystery of her life became his obsession and his determination to bring to public her work and talent. You can read up about it... it's a fascinating story and the documentary instantly compelling for the viewer to discover this woman, as much as is possible in posterity.
