Happy 70th birthday to John Byrne. If you read superhero comics in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, Byrne was everywhere — X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, The Hulk, Superman, She-Hulk, Namor. As writer/artist Byrne was never afraid to kill off, change or replace a beloved character, which didn’t always please readers, but he kept it interesting and created some of the great story arcs in the stagnation-prone superhero genre. (Chris Claremont should be mentioned as Byrne’s X-Men scripter and Terry Austin as Byrne’s classic inker.) Here’s a full-page image of the title character from “The Last Galactus Story,” Byrne’s serial that ran in Epic Illustrated in the mid-‘80s.
