19-year-old Janet Jackson's 3rd studio album was released on 4 February 1986.
After firing her father as her manager (Joseph Jackson had overseen most of the details of her first 2 albums) and hired A&M senior vice president John McClain, McClain introduced Janet to James "Jimmy Jam" Harris III and Terry Lewis, who spent time with Jackson and collaborated on an album that would be seen as innovative at the time, combining disco, funk, rap, R&B, and synth.
Control would debut on the Billboard album chart in early May, entering at #84. 20 weeks later it was #1, selling 250,000 copies that week (a record for a female artist at the time) and would go on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide.
Jackson, Jam and Lewis, and Monte Moir would receive a Grammy for their production, and Control has gone on to be cited as not only one of the best albums of the 1980s, but one of the best albums of all time (Apple, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone, Vibe).
