October 1953 - In the lobby of a Japanese hotel, hitter John Britton tells Fusako-san, daughter of the hotel keeper, why he can get more power by using an American made bat while Japanese teammates look on. Britton and two other ballplayers, Larry Raines and Jonas “Lefty” Gaines, are regular members of the Hankyu Braves, leading Japanese team.
October 1953 - Leaving the hotel for the ballpark, John Britton has salt sprinkled on his neck by Fusako-san. This is a traditional Japanese ritual for chasing away evil spirits and ensuring victory. Larry Raines (left) used to play shortstop for the Chicago American Giants.
