Best remembered as the patriarch on the Norman Lear sitcom Good Times in the 1970s (the show was a spin-off of the Norman Lear sitcom Maude starring Bea Arthur), Amos also portrayed adult Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries Roots for which he received an Emmy nomination. Other credits include a co-starring role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show as weatherman Gordy Howard, and guest appearances on the series The Love Boat, The A-Team, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Murder, She Wrote, The West Wing, Two and a Half Men, and numerous others. His film credits include featured roles in The World's Greatest Athlete (1973), The Beastmaster (1982), Coming to America (1988), Lock Up (1989), Die Hard 2 (1990), Dr. Dolittle 3 (2006), Uncut Gems (2019), and Coming 2 America (2021).
