joel, after bdubs says hi bestie: "it's just me and him online, gosh. oh, i'm blushing. what was i saying? i've got all flustered, i can't remember."
--
JOEL. JO. JOEL. YOU DONT. JOEL. YAOI IS NOT A FULL TIME JOB WHO IS HOLDING A GUN TO YOUR HEAD !!! WHO !!!! WHO IS MAKING YOU DO THIS !!!!
Ouchie, ouchie, ouchie. It hurts so bad, and Joel canât stop whining about it to his mamas. It feels like thereâs something in his wrist thatâs all twisted wrong. It feels like his hand is too hot and his bones are getting too big for his skin.
Thereâs a pretty nurse, though. Heâs a big guy with dark skin, and he leads Joel through a maze of corridors with all different rooms leading off them into a bigger room where thereâs two beds. One of them is empty; the other one has a little boy in it.
The boy has white hairâJoelâs never seen a kid with white hair before! Itâs so interestingâand a red bandana. Heâs wearing a t-shirt showing a white bird with a long neck and a little furry rat with rings around his eyes that says âI am up to some nonsenseâ. (Joelâs very proud of himself for reading it.) The boy blinks slowly at Joel, like heâs not quite sure what heâs seeing. Then he smiles wide, and thereâs a couple missing teeth. Joel smiles back, his pain momentarily forgotten.
The nurse tells Mama Birdie and Mama Mouse to help Joel into the bed, and Mama Mouse picks him up under his armpits and sets him in it. Itâs not very comfy; itâs all stiff and itâs sitting up too straight.
The nurse examines his hand and asks his mamas some questions, but Joel just stares at the boy on the other side of the room. âHi!â he whispers. Heâs trying to be quiet, so Mama Birdie can keep saying whatever sheâs saying to the nurse, which is probably way more boring than making a new friend. âWhatâs your name?â
The boy tilts his head to one side. âYou talk funny,â he says. âYou talk⌠funny. Iâm Booker Orion Octavio, but everyone calls me B Double O. If you wanna be my friend, you can call me Bdubs!â He looks proud, puffing up his chest at the end of his sentence.
Joel giggles. âYou talk funny,â he answers. âYou talk like all the people here. Why does no one here sound like me except Mama Mouse?â
Mama Mouse pats his leg. âBecause we live in America now, baby. You have a British accent because Iâm British, but we live in the USA, so weâre surrounded by Americans.â
Bdubs blinks. âYouâre British! Like in⌠um⌠Peppa Pig!â
Joel giggles again. âYeah! My sisterâs Aw-strah-lian like Bluey!â
âQuiet down, kiddo,â says the man sitting next to Bdubs. âYour new friend is getting examined.â
Bdubs nods hard, and stays quiet for a moment or two. Joel counts to nine in his head before Bdubs speaks again. âWhy are you at the doctorâs?â
Joel sighs, lifting up his ouchie hand. âI hurt my hand. Why are you here?â
âI fell off theâ fell off. Off the monkey bars! And Daddy thinks I hit my head, so he took me here to check for a cushion.â
âA concussion,â his daddy corrects. Joel nods, pretending he knows what that means.
âRight, yeah!â Bdubs agrees. Joel grins at him. He decides he likes this boy.
âWeâre friends now,â says Joel. âI like you.â
Bdubs grins back. âI like you too.â
[Morgan makes sure to get Bookerâs dadâs number to schedule playdates. Her son just struggles so much to make friends; other kids tend to think that Joelâs too intense. He gets really stringent about how play should go and the other kids donât always like that. Morgan wants to make sure that if heâs taking to this boy, he gets to see him more.]
----
âYouâre a moron!â Joel laughs, throwing the couch pillow at Bdubsâ face. It smacks him hard enough to send him reeling, though itâs really quite soft so itâs not like it properly hurts him. When the pillow falls into his lap, he glares at Joel.
âYouâreâ youâre a meanâ a stupid! A big dumb jerky jerkface whoââ His sentence is cut off by the presence of a second pillow in his face. âOh, now youâre really gonna get it!â
He jumps to his feet, grabbing the pillow from his sleeping bag, and smacks Joel in the shoulder with it. Joel canât restrain his laughter even as he falls to the ground from the force of the blow. He catches himself on the couch.
âGonna join us, Eefo?â he asks the birthday boy. Etho shakes his head.
âIâm good watchinâ. You guys are weird.â
Joel catches, out of the corner of his eye, the way Bdubs droops. The pillow falls to his side and he watches Etho with a slightly sad expression. âOh,â he says quietly. âWe can stop.â
âYeah, stop,â says Tango, rolling his eyes. Joel sticks his tongue out at him. Maybe heâs freshly thirteen, but youâre never too old to stick your tongue out at somebody whoâs being a butthead.
âI donât wanna stop,â Joel mutters. âI like beating Bdubs up.â
Bdubs turns back to him, some of the gleam returning to his gaze. âYeah, well Iâm gonna hand you your lunch! Iâm gonna shake you down for your pocket change! Iâm gonnaâ Iâm gonnaââ
âAre you gonna come up with a better threat?â Joel goads. He just needs to keep Bdubsâ attention on him. Everyone else can focus on Etho, as they probably should be considering itâs his birthday, but Bdubs⌠Bdubs should always be looking at Joel.
[Maybe heâs too young yet to name the warm feeling that grows in his chest when he looks at Bdubs. To give voice to the ugly, caustic part of him that hates the way Bdubs looks at Etho, and thinks about Etho, and talks about Ethoâ all the time, Etho this, Etho that. He chews on it like sunflower seeds, trying to swallow the bitterness with his cherry soda. Heâs too young. But soon.]
The provocation does its job, because Bdubs raises his pillow again, stepping over Skizzâlaying in his sleeping bag pretending he doesnât get a kick out of this stuffâand swings at Joel. Joel ducks below it and then his pillow connects with Bdubsâ side, though not hard enough to knock him off-balance. Bdubs pursues further.
Itâs not until Bdubs has him in a headlock, smashing the pillow into his face over and over as Joel laughs (and laughs, and laughs) that Joel finally says, âalright, you win!â
Bdubs releases him and they collapse together into their own sleeping bags, side by side. As always.
That is the thing, the thing that Joelâs never been able to really process or understand. He takes it for granted, because itâs been them since they were five years old. Wherever one of them went, the other was never far behind. Joel would come home from school and rush through his homework so he could write Bdubs a letter, and then he would beg Mama Birdie to drive it over to Bdubsâ house. And she would come home with one from him as well.
[Joel doesnât know that Bdubs keeps all those letters in a box under his bed. Bdubs doesnât know that Joel hides them in his pillowcase.]
As they fall asleep, their hands pressed together through two layers of nylon, Joel imagines that theyâll run off someday, just the two of them, where no one can bother them. His favorite dreams are those.
----
Joelâs just circling back to the band room to pick up his drumsticks for the weekend. He didnât mean to hear it. He wasnât eavesdropping.
He just⌠didnât leave when he realized it was Bdubs in there.
âHeâs a dick, you know that right?â
Itâs not a voice Joel recognizes. Probably some nobody from marching band who Joel wouldnât recognize even if he could see his face. He hesitates for a moment when he hears the voice, lingering on the other side of the door, not wanting to interrupt, and when the other person speaks, he freezes, his hand inches from the handle.
âYeah,â Bdubs says. âJoelâs always been a dick. He yells, heâ hits people a little too hard, he cracks jokes at your expense that you can never really tell if he means. He justâ heâ him brain not buildââ Bdubs sighs, that sigh that Joel knows so well, when the words are all jumbling in his head and he canât make them come out of his mouth the way theyâre supposed to. Joel wishes he could slip his hand into his friendâs and remind him to take his time. The words will come.
Then his brain catches up to him, and he realizes what Bdubs said. He deflates, all the fondness and sympathy leaving him in a rush. Bdubs thinks heâs a dick? After twelve years of friendship? How long has this been the case? How long has Bdubs been lying to him?
His hand wraps around the handle and he presses it down, ready to burst in there and give Bdubs a piece of his mind, other rando be damned. But then Bdubs starts to talk again.
âHis brain isnât built for affection the same way the rest of us are. Heâs just different.â
âWhy are you still friends with him? Heâs not a good person.â
The vitriol in Bdubsâ voice when he answers is so intense that Joel can picture exactly which face heâs making. âYou donât dare to say such things about my best friend!â he shouts. Joelâs gonna get whiplash from how quickly his emotions make a left turn into deep affection and warmth for Bdubs.
âJust because Joel doesnât express himself like you do doesnât mean heâs a bad person. Heâs not nice, but he cares, and heâs special, and I like him. Donât talk bad about him to me. The next time you say somethinâ like that, Iâll deck you. Try me.â
Whoever cornered him scoffs in disgusted irritation. âRight, cause you just want to kiss him. What a weird fag. Iâll see you later.â
And then there are footsteps traveling rapidly toward where Joelâs currently standing on the other side of the band room door. He doesnât have time to hide. The door swings open and some kid he doesnât recognize almost walks into him. He pulls up short, looking at Joel with wide eyes before his expression quickly drops into something smug and laced with malice.
âHey, Booker, your boyfriendâs here. Have fun with whatever nasty gay shit youâve got going on,â he calls over his shoulder. He shoves past Joel, shoulder-checking him as he goes. Joel forces himself to ignore him, despite the rage bubbling under his skin, and goes to find Bdubs instead.
Bdubs, whoâs standing in the center of the empty band room, shaking. His teeth are gritted, his face contorted into an expression of rage and pain and weariness, his hands balled into fists.
He needs softness right now. And Joelâs not good at that, but if he can do it for anyone, heâll do it for Bdubs. He can. He can.
He strolls through the rows of music stands arranged in a half circle to stand in front of Bdubs, frozen in the middle of the third row of the wind section. âDubs,â he whispers. âTalk to me.â
Bdubs looks past him, his jaw clenched but his lower lip trembling. He doesnât answer. Joel nudges him. âCâmon, Bdubs, itâs just some arsehole. I donât even know who that is. Dunno how or why he decided he hates me.â
Bdubs shakes his head. âNo, itâsâ Iâm notâ heâsââ There it is again, that frustrated sigh, this time laced with a sharp edge of chagrin, like heâs fighting the tears. Joelâs sat next to him through enough meltdowns that he understands whatâs coming. He reaches for Bdubsâ hand and gently pries his fingers apart, massaging his aching knuckles.
âItâs okay,â Joel says. He feels terribly out of his element, but this is Bdubs. His best friend. Heâs gonna do this for him. Heâs not the person that guy thought he was. Bdubs wouldnât like him that much if he were. âTake your time, mate.â
Bdubs is still staring off into space. Joel drops his right hand and reaches out to grab his jaw, turning his head so heâs looking at Joel. Bdubs swallows, seeming to come back to himself, if only a bit. His eyes look hollow, as if everything that makes him Bdubs has been scooped out from behind them. He opens his mouth, then closes it again. Then he says, âJoel, Iâm gay.â
Joel blinks.
Itâs not even that he didnât know. He just⌠well, he wasnât expecting Bdubs to say it now. Heâd wondered. Heâs always been a bit fruity, to say the least, and he never really talked about girls. Even when Joel was talking about girls. Even when Etho was talking about girls. Even when everyone around him was talking about girls, he kind of just⌠stayed quiet. Said nothing.
Joel didnât know know. But he suspected. He wondered.
[Thereâs something inside him that calls to Bdubs like his kin, that says you are my family, my chosen. Something that says âI have two mums. You have two dads. Maybe we were always meant to be this way.â Something that recognizes Bdubs as a twin flame.
Thereâs something inside him that echoes in Bdubsâ chest. Theyâve always been mirrors of each other, a bonded pair. Inseparable in every sense. And Bdubs knows that no one will love him through this secret more than Joel, not even his dads.]
Bdubs releases his fist and leans forward, dropping his head onto Joelâs chest. âIâm sorry,â he whispers. âHeâs wrong. I know youâre not my boyfriend.â
Joel takes his hand. âItâs okay, Bdubs. Heâs a jerk. Letâs go home.â
He leads Bdubs out of the school and drives him home. He stays for dinner with Josh and Carey, and the whole time, he wonders if thereâs a hole in his chest, throbbing in time with the words.
I know youâre not my boyfriend.
Heâs not. So why does he keep thinking about it?
----
Bdubs goes to uni five hours away. Joelâs excited for him, really. He got into his top choice, which has an incredible architecture program. Despite what most people would expect from him, he had a three-point-nine in secondary.
Joel stays local. He goes back home and visits his mums on the weekends. He works hard in his classes. He wants to show Bdubs that he can do it, too. He wants to show himself.
Itâs just⌠hard, sometimes. Being so far away. They still text every day, but itâs not the same.
So he waits. His moment finally comes during sophomore year, the last day of classes before Bdubsâ Christmas break. He has a 3 p.m. lesson, then heâs free. Joelâs driving half the day, but he gets there at 3:52. He sits in his car in the parking lot next to the architecture buildingâthey have a really nice campusâand waits patiently for Bdubs to arrive. His surprise is tucked away in his bag, ready for him to show Bdubs exactly how much he means.
[Heâs not too young anymore. In fact, heâs all too aware, the realization hitting him suddenly the day Bdubs left for uni, exactly what that tangled knot of emotions that sits behind his sternum means. Beyond that, he knows thereâs no escape for him now. The ivy has been wrapping itself around his bones for fifteen years, and now itâs as much a part of him as the green streak in his hair. Bdubs is a part of him.]
When Bdubs steps out of the brick building, Joel can read his body language even at a distance. He squints at Joelâs car, clearly asking himself is that Joelâs car? and when he catches sight of Joel behind the glare on the windshield, his expression clears and he starts to jog.
âWhat the heck are ya doing here?â he demands the second the passenger door closes behind him. âYou didnât say you were coming up.â
Joel grins at him. âItâs two weeks for Christmas and New Yearâs. Iâve got somefing for you.â
Bdubs shakes his head in disbelief, strapping himself in. âDrive me back to the dorms, Iâve gotta get my stuff together. I assume youâre taking me home then?â
Joel shrugs one shoulder, but he canât keep the satisfied smile off his face as he pulls out of the parking lot. âYour dads wanted to see you. They said you were coming home.â
âYeah, but I was gonna take the train,â Bdubs sighs, just a few degrees off from whining. Joel rolls his eyes.
âDonât pretend like youâre not thrilled Iâm here.â
Bdubs licks his lips, a longstanding nervous habit. âMaybe not.â He glances over at Joel. âMissed you.â
Joelâs smile only grows, until heâs sure he looks like a serial killer. (Bdubs is attractive when heâs smiling; Joelâs a lot more attractive when heâs not.) âMissed you too,â he answers.
Conversation is easy between them, even after not seeing each other for almost six months. Thatâs the thing with him and Bdubsâthey can always fall back into their old rhythms. The drive to Bdubsâ flat is only a few minutes, and then itâs up the stairs to the second floor, and Joel shoulders his messenger bag, one hand on the strap, and he waits patiently in Bdubsâ living room as Bdubs pulls together his suitcase.
Then Bdubs steps out of his room, dragging his suitcase behind him, and he says, âkay, letâs head out.â
Joel stops him with a hand on his chest. âWait,â he says quietly. âIâve got somefing for you.â
Bdubs licks his lips again. âYou said that earlier.â
âIâm gonna give it to you.â
âIt canât wait âtil we get home?â
âNo.â Joelâs firm on this. If he doesnât do it now, he never will. Heâll tuck the very expensive purchase away in a corner of his room and never touch them again, never tell Bdubs they were there, never release the pressure of these feelings in his chest. âIâm giving it to you now.â
He lifts the flap of his shoulder bag and pulls the box out. Seventy-two Copic markers. Joel doesnât get why Bdubs needs so many of the same coloursâ[heâs colourblind, theyâll find out later]âbut Bdubs wanted them. Joel saved up for a year to get them for him.
âThese are so expensive, dude, what the fuck?â Bdubs demands. He doesnât look mad. Joel thinks.
He just shrugs, trying to pass it off casual. âYou asked for them.â
âYeah, like six months ago!â
âI got them for you.â
The room is quiet for a moment as the weight of that statement sinks in. Then Bdubs lifts his hands off his suitcase and up to cup Joelâs face. âYouâre crazy,â he says evenly, and then he kisses Joel so hard he drops the markers.
âThereâs only like five colours,â Joel argues on the drive back home. âThereâs no way you need all of those.â
âIâm making you take a colour blindness test the second weâre out of this car,â Bdubs threatens. âYour eyes donât freakinâ work.â
âPfft,â says Joel. âAs if.â
Bdubs, it turns out, is right.
smallgrass aka joeldubs? holds them out to you like little wet cats
*takes them from you gently* *holds them up like simba*
Smallgrass!
Crumbability; 8.5/10, S11, they fought over Etho but really they wanted each other
Compatability; 7/10, they're not compatible, and I think that makes them compatible
Cuteness; 7.5/10, horse lover, horse killer, the fanart is wonderful
Dynamic; 8/10, enemies to lovers, fighting over the girl (Etho) but really they wanted each other
Un-ickyness; 7.5/10, naturally at some point either side of the Etho triangle were going to connect
Overall; 7.6/10, they're so silly <3
Back on my God-ish Joel Headcanons (+Some glare Bdubs) (I know it hasn't been that long but it came to me in a vision)
Joel can *somewhat* control plant life, okay? He doesn't use it often, he can build it all by hand and be proud of himself.
But Bdubs' cloak is made of moss, and Joel's sure he wouldn't mind if that moss just sometimes grew a bit...
Meanwhile, Bdubs is getting mad because, it's HIS moss cloak! He's the Glare it's attached to! He's supposed to control how long or short the moss is!
When it finally turns out that Joel is somewhat god-like, Bdubs learns that Joel can control growing plants. Contrary to the 'mhm' 'cool' and 'okay' that Bdubs and other hermits previously gave Joel, there is this head snap, and Bdubs just says "You." much to everyone's confusion.
related ask!
What follows is one of the most embarrassing chase sequences known to man, not helped by the fact Joel can't stop laughing. Bdubs would have no chance if Joel didn't keep tripping over himself.
At least Bdubs knows he isn't going crazy now! What a menace that Joel is... Should cover his base in moss, see how he likes it!

âJOEL! YOUâ where are you, you little,â Bdubs swears as he storms into Joelâs house. His boots thump loudly against the floor.
When he turns the corner into the storage room, Joel is there, grinning far too sweet for a criminal. âHello, Bdubs. Fancy seeing you here.â
âYou,â he hisses, crowding into Joelâs space, âkilled them.â
Joel tilts his head, mocking the look of thinking before he answers. âKilled who?â
That bastard.
âThe horsies! Youâre a murderer!â
âOh, do you mean the gift you left for me? Their screams are so relaxing donât you think?â
Bdubs glares even more, hand going to the sword at his hip.
âWhat did you expect me to do,â Joel continues, ignoring the threat. âMake cute little houses for all of them? Iâm not Etho.â
âThatâs it.â He spits out. The sword rings out when Bdubs pulls it from its sheath. âYou will pay for what youâve done!â
Bdubs backs up and swings. The glint of the sword through the air and a splash of red across Joelâs chest.
âYou really wanna play that game Bdubs?â âWhat was that for?â
Joel should be more hurt. Why is he advancing? Shouldnât he have a sword?
Bdubs swings again, but in his panic he misses, the sword only catching the edge of Joelâs arm. And then Joel is in his space.
His hand shakesâ no it doesnât. Heâs strong and has the advantage and Joel was caught off guard by his perfect plan. Definitely not the other way around. Nope.
Joel presses against the blade, until it is trapped between them. The blood is soaking into his shirt and a hand curls into his hair roughly.
âOh I see,â Joel purrs. âIs Etho not giving you enough attention?â
âYouâre one to talk.â His voice definitely doesnât crack.
âSure,â Joel grins sharply. His breath is warm against Bdubsâ face. âBut, at least he reciprocates my pranks.â
The short kiss to his nose is over before Bdubs processes what Joel is doing. Heat rises to his cheeks and he watches in real time as Joel seems to take in every inch of his face. Eyes slowly devouring him between glances at his lips.
Bdubs pounces. Lips meet his own in a mess of tongues and teeth until the hand in his hair pulls.
Joel breaks away breathing heavily.
âHowâs that for attention?â
âYou fucker.â
Joelâs inventory explodes onto the floor.
Some short grass doodles for the starved and curious. Plus one sided tangdubs lmao
The quality of photos is great also.

16. A kiss while someone watches, Bdubs/Joel, 849 words
Honestly, Bdubs saw this coming ages ago.
Since Double Life, in fact. He'd have to be blind, deaf, and stupid not to notice the way Etho and Joel clicked. Like two halves of the same whole that had Bdubs wondering, not for the first time, if the game knew something they didn't. Bdubs hadn't been surprised when Etho came to him two sessions in to say that being with Joel felt Good. The kind of capital-letter-warranting feeling that Etho used to describe how he felt with people like Doc, like Beef, like Bdubs. Bdubs was sure at that point that Etho was in love. He was just as sure that, in time, he'd love Joel as well.
A lot had happened since then. Limited Life, the Rift debacle, The Decked Out 2 invitations, Secret Life. Season Nine had ended. When Season Ten began, Joel was there, and he took to being a Hermit like sparks to dry kindling, getting happily caught up in the whirlwind of early-game adventures.
