YOU & ME
A AU story on the series ‘You’
Story Summary: Joe Goldberg has a sister. She knows about Joe’s obsessions, yet she supports him. She rarely knows about the killings he’s done… but Little does Joe know his sister has a big secret about his well-known obsession… Guinevere Beck.
Author's note: This is also a Wattpad story out now! My Wattpad account is @ LilyTheWriter15!
TW: 18+, murder, stalking, blood.
Part 2: Lucky or NOT so lucky in New York.
I am making sure that you, with your stalking ways, try not to take it too far, aside from the whole masturbation moment, of course; aside from that, it's mostly keeping watch on Beck. I look more into Beck to see why she has you so obsessed; aside from Benji, Beck has siblings, Sister Anya and Brother Clyde, and your father, Edward Beck; the mother is unknown; her folks split when she was twelve, born and raised in Nantucket Island, and went to Brown University, where she majored in literature, and moved to NYC to start what she loved most; now she still writes. Barely. Too busy to live out what she won't remember 5 years from now, and I notice this because she posts this all the damn time.
Now, candidly, this is an intriguing thing about her, Joe. But from what I've seen, she seems completely different from Candace. Not only that, but now I know how you stalked her. Joe, she has her address on an Instagram post from what I see, and I must say, I never took a blonde like her for yoga. Then her friend Lynn Lieser, a publicist, hashtag cocktail lover, daughter of a surgeon and a tech CEO. Adopted. Annika Attwater, Rich, hashtag carefree, building a brand as a body-positive influencer, Lastly, Peach Salinger is from a wealthy family; her father is Barry Salinger, and one of her relatives is J.D. Salinger. The queen bee of the friend group seems to be the one to take "control" of things, it seems. Interesting taste in friends, I must say.
I get a knock on the door. I went up to answer it, Paco. "Paco, hey." He made a faint smile. "What's wrong?" I asked him, a concerned expression on my face. "Ron…" He spoke softly. "Did he hurt you?" I asked, hoping to fucking god he didn't. "No, he and Mom are fighting again; I had to get out of there." I nodded, understanding him. "Come in, buddy; Joe should be back in an hour," I said to him. Really, you are actually hanging out with Beck. I know this because I tracked your phone. Throughout Paco's stay, I made sure that he ate; currently he's reading Frankenstein that you gave him. I then get a buzzer on my phone; the date is cut short. Hmm, I can tell why. I better see what "Memento" you have kept since Candace.
"Hey Paco, I'm going to go check something out from Joe's apartment, okay? I shouldn't be long." I went downstairs, and I entered your apartment. I looked around to see if there was anything; I saw a glimpse of a fabric poking out from under your bed. Panties, I assume it's Beck's. I bend down to pick it up, confirming my suspicions. Suspicion is correct; it is hers. For the love of Christ, why did I even guess Beck on the first thought? I roll my eyes. I then see a broken phone, Beck's phone, but she has a new phone. I remember because I followed you, seeing what you were seeing, which was her opening a new phone. I opened the phone just for curiosity. Well, she didn't have a password or face ID on her phone, which made it easy for you to look into texts and all. Pictures, texts, and contacts were all accessible. I took a deep sigh, seeing that you and Beck talked about the date earlier. The first, the two of you talked, and me, nothing yet, but I'm patient. Now I shouldn't be jealous, but with Beck being your obsession, Joe, I'd do everything to make sure that his grasp is removed. Now I don't want to break your heart, big bro, but after what you did to Candace, it says otherwise.
Later this night, I was told to be with you at the bookstore to see what Benji is up to. I am sitting at the desk, my legs slightly dangling as you are sitting down with a list of books that white privilege over there "read". I didn't want to be involved, but my curiosity got the best of me. And yet I was the one who hit him with a mallet. But here's a little fact Benji has confirmed to us, he has a peanut allergy. "If I knew you were gonna quiz me, I'd have more recent books on the list," Benji says as he finishes pacing back and forth. "So, you never even read "On the Road"?" I asked Benji, with a raised eyebrow. I watch you lean forward as you speak. "You're a fraud."
Oh boy, Joe, this is going to be a hefty moment with the man.
"Give me the stupid book; I can read it right now." Benji's voice was filled with anger and frustration. He clearly wants to get out of here; I don't blame him, but when it comes to you, Joe, it's not gonna be easy. You walk over to the cage, leaning against it, "You look a little gray and mealy in there." Joe says, I look at you, then at Benji. "You stole my stash!" He's a druggie. "Thought it wasn't for you." Joe says, Oh, you—we are slowly ripping bit by bit on him, I guess. Benji made a small sigh. "Fine, are you happy? It's mine. I'm chipper," as in using drugs. "I never do it more than three days in a row, and I'm quitting." Benji added, Oh sure, he is. We had to force his password on his phone too, oh, and surprise, surprise, the password was another woman's name, oh Beck, poor girl. I went through his phone after Joe gave him the drug by having Benji snort it and grin happily. Seems he doesn't miss Beck when gone, Joe. You gestured for me to give you Benji's phone; I handed it over without hesitation, just looking at the drug addict before me. Oh Beck, she deserves so much better than this.
After another hour while you were out at some party with Beck, I think it had to do with Peach. I decided to look more into Benji's background and history. And speaking of the damn devil, it was my turn to deal with the sack of lying shit. I gave him another round of coke or whatever the fuck it was, and I looked on his phone, finding private pics of him with other women, only 10 of Beck, and a lot more, most likely 100 of other women, including his messages. I can hear Benji speak about Beck in the most awful ways, saying she's a gold digger who likes to be spanked with a red ladle. It's disgusting how he talks about her behind her back. As much as I don't want you to do this, Joe, I'm wishing you killed him right about now, or if you asked me to kill him, I'd hate to do it, but… I would.
Ugh, look at him, snorting his cocaine like the junkie he is. How did Beck even think that he'd love her, him sleeping with other women, fucking her as a "make up" only for him to fuck other girls and be wasted? He's a fucking piece of shit. Oh, Beck, you deserve so much better than this white privilege piece of garbage.
The next day, I was told by you that Beck's professor was perverted, but like the smart girl she is, she stopped it, but he decided to not have Beck's wish come true of being a writer. If I were there, I would have beat that perverted professor to a pulp. But I avoid being violent. But of course she called you to finish your conversation with her from that date 15 minutes after Professor Pervert left. It seems like you were invited by Beck herself to a party for her friend or… "queen bee" Peach Salinger. While you were there at that party, I was keeping my eyes on the coke-snorting bimbo here. I would have to post on his social media when necessary. Which were your orders? Benji here would be talking to himself, Oh, Joe, how long will this go on? As I was dealing with Benji, I got a text from you telling me that Candace's old friend Maddie was at the party and mentioned me in the conversation, revealing that I was your sister, which is true, well. Now Beck knows who I am.
I got to my apartment building, and I saw Paco reading Ozma of Oz. "Ozma of Oz? Joe gave that to you, I assume?" "He did, actually," said Paco. I made a small smile. I sat next to him. "Did Joe tell you where to hide the book, the ceiling?" Paco nodded with a small smile, yet I could hear Ron and Claudia arguing, muffled voices coming from his apartment. "Good, I'm glad he did, because when I was a kid, Joe would steal my books a lot, and I'd hide them in the most unexpected place—the ceiling. It's a good place to hide things." My words made him smile. I stood up, and I ruffled his hair. "Oh, did Joe apologize for yelling at you?" I asked him, Paco nodded, and I made a small smile. I heard what you did by yelling at Paco. I understand why; Benji was down there at the same time, Joe. He's just a kid. "Goodnight, Paco…" I said before walking up the stairs to my apartment. "Goodnight, Lidia," said Paco, his voice soft, filled with warmth.
The next morning, nothing exactly new, but I did get a wake-up call from your creepily calm, panicked tone. "Come down here. now." I sat up, my eyes widening like saucers. "Joe. What happened?" I asked you; my tone was low and serious. I could hear the sound of Benji's screams, begging in the background of your line on the phone; that immediately made me hang up, leaving me in my sweats and tee, grabbing my shoes, jacket, and keys, quickly locking my apartment door, and quickly leaving the apartment building running, not even bothering to catch a cab.
"JOE!" I yelled as I ran down the stairs of the basement. What I saw shocked me: shirtless Benji crying, ripped pieces of first edition books in the glass cage, an empty bucket tipped over, and him yelling, "KILL ME, JUST KILL ME!" he exclaimed. He was clearly desperate for death, and I didn't know how to help him. You and I just looked at him, unsure of what to do next.
We had to clean up the mess until we heard Benji say, "You were right, I am a fraud." I put down my own broom, leaning my back against the glass, staring at Benji, along with Joe, gripping his own broom. "I've done things worse than you," he spoke, his voice cracking on "you". Worse, how much worse is he talking about? "That's how I know you both… you both are not killers…" Benji said. He's right about me, but he has no idea what you're capable of, Joe.
"If you tell me your darkest secret, and I tell you mine, you'll let me go?" He spoke weakly, like he was in defeat. "I'll tell you mine." I said to Benji. "I once beat up and almost killed my father because he was beating my mom up, threatening her, my brother… I was young and filled with fear. I didn't know what to do. Till it was finally over and I got what I wanted, to protect." I spoke. "That's my dark secret…" I added. Now… Benji has no idea we are siblings, Joe, and he never will. I squatted down in front of him, my eyes eyeing his. "Your turn..." I spoke.
You and I got a video Benji recorded. There were many intriguing items on Benji's nightstand, but the man was correct in one regard: this thumb drive is the most fascinating, especially on you, Joe. Poor kid, Benji was drowning this kid, who appeared to be a college student. Frat-hazing began for Benji, but a certain intensity kicked in on him. Blame the Coke or the homophobia. Yet as I watched this in front of me, you were standing there, slowly pacing, thinking of something. Benji has his hand in this kid's head, drowning the fuck outta him.
Benji's friends and he were all standing there, laughing. And Benji here was the worst because he was the one holding the camera. Beck is with a junkie and a killer, Joe, but is this an accidental kill or a purposeful kill? It wouldn't matter he did what he did, but with this, I stopped the video, I looked up at you, Joe, and you looked at me, closing my laptop. I let out a deep sigh. "What do you want to do?" I asked you, what will you do, Joe? Will you keep him? Or set him free?
I am working on the books, and Joe is writing down God knows what. The sound of chimes is heard from the bell at the door again. I look, and there is Beck. I hear their conversation, but I can't make out what they're saying. But I did hear a part of it: "Not everyone gets why I'm here and what being a writer means. It's the most… I mean, it's the only important thing, and…" "You helped me to not lose it." Beck said to you, At least Beck has some care for that.
I bet she is a good writer, Joe. Maybe she has flaws, but she has a passion for writing that is undeniable. I made a small smile from those words, even though you are doing a terrible thing. Beck. She deserves better than this, and yet she doesn't know your real, true nature, Joe.
I looked down for a moment to put a book away. Once I looked back, you and Beck… Kiss. Wow. I swallow hard. No, no, Lidia, don't get jealous. I should be happy for you, Joe, but I'm scared for Beck. I hope she doesn't get hurt by you. I see you walk to the basement to check on Benji if he's awake, or whatever reason.
But I get a ding on my email. Beck. She probably saw me. "Hi, Lidia!" I read. "I was wondering if we could talk before I go to class. I'm outside of the bookstore." That message raised my eyebrows. I told Ethan to take over the register, and I walked out of the bookstore. I saw Beck there biting her lip nervously. "Hi.." I said to her. Beck looked up at me.
"You summoned me?" I asked with a joke in my voice; Beck made a small smile and rolled her eyes. "I did. Look, I'm sure you were told this maybe; I don't know, but is it true that you're Joe's sister?" Beck asked, curious, her hazel green eyes sparkling with interest. I made a small chuckle looking down. "I am his sister, younger sister. Joe and I are 3 years apart…" I said to Beck, God, she's beautiful.
"I saw you and Joe kiss," I said to Beck. I was hesitant to point it out, but I wanted to see her reaction. Her cheeks flushed a bit. "Yeah, I made the move first." Beck responded. I nodded. "Sorry to point that out, but you know, I'm his sister. Don't worry, I'm not the overprotective one." I say with a chuckle.
Beck made a chuckle of relief. "Good, I wouldn't want to have to deal with that." I made a smile, looking at Beck. "Don't worry, I promise I won't be too hard on you." Beck smiled back at me, grateful for my reassurance, biting her lip while nodding in agreement. "I, um, I better get to class." Beck said nervously, and I blinked, "Yeah, of course, have a good class, Beck." I said to her before she gave me a quick wave and walked away.
I walked back inside the bookstore. I went to check on Joe and see how Benji was holding up. Once I made one last step, I saw something that shocked me. Benji was lying on the floor, a cup of coffee dropped on the glass cage's carpet, and you were standing there with a look of no regret on your face. Benji wasn't moving. "Joe…" I spoke your name. "What the fuck did you just do?" I asked you, my brown eyes wide with shock. You never looked at me, and your voice was filled with malignancy as you replied, "It was real after all." "What was real?" I asked you; it took me a second for it to hit me like a ton of bricks.
The peanut allergy. Benji's peanut allergy.
"You wouldn't do this after Candace, Joe." I spoke, my voice filled with dread. You looked at me and spoke, "Life goes on, Lidia." Your words sent chills down my spine. You killed Benji. Because of Guinevere Beck. "Do you fucking realize what you just did?" My voice rose; it wasn't a yell, but anger was in it. I could feel the rage boiling inside me. "I did this for Beck, Lidia." You said to me, your eyes filled with determination and madness.
"What the fuck will you do now?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the fear creeping up inside me. "No, what do we do?" You corrected. "NO, there is no WE in this; you locked him in a cage, forced me to knock him out, and you fucking killed him? I'm not helping you again! If Beck finds—" You roughly clasp my mouth shut, cutting off my words.
"Beck won't know anything, because I did this for her, for love, not for me." I shoved him back , watching as he stumbled and fell to the ground. "You're sick, Joe… You better find a way to get rid of his body." I said to him, before leaving the basement.
What the FUCK happens now!?
