Adrian designed this stunning white gown for Greta Garbo’s starring role in the 1936 film 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆.
It was reused several years later in the 1940 film 𝑹𝒆𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒄𝒂, where Joan Fontaine wore it as the second Mrs. de Winter.
At first, it’s difficult to tell that the gowns are the same, the costume in 𝑹𝒆𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒄𝒂 clearly having been heavily made over, with the stars being removed, flowers added to the skirt and additional lace added around the bodice and sleeves. However, a wardrobe test of Joan Fontaine trying on various other famous gowns is what clues us in that these two dresses are, in fact, the same. As Fontaine stands in front of the camera, the dress from 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆 appears in its unaltered form, the stars still present. What other famous gowns did Joan Fontaine try on for her wardrobe test?
