On April 23rd, 2026, the town of Enid, Oklahoma was completely destroyed by an EF4 tornado that touched down at 8:11 PM CDT and dissipated at 8:48 PM CDT, being on the ground for 37 minutes and leaving behind a 9.5 mi (15.3 km) damage path. Multiple animals were injured and killed, and 10 people were injured. Millions of dollars in damage was also caused.

The tornado was rated an EF4 with a top forward speed of 20 mph (32 km/h), a maximum width of 500-600 yards, and peak wind speeds of 180 mph (290 km/h).

However, recent data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggests this tornado might’ve been an EF5. A wind gust of 205 mph (330 km/h) was recorded, and damage on Southgate Road shows possible EF5 damage with wind speed estimates of 205-217 mph (330-349 km/h). Some even suggest wind speed estimates of 210-266 mph (337-428 km/h)!

The National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) along with the University of Illinois has done vortex simulations on tree fall patterns, which showed maximum wind speed velocities in that area reached over 205 mph (330 km/h).

On Southgate Road, the tornado also managed to pick up a 17,000 lb (7,711 kg) RV frame and throw it nearly 920 ft (280.41 m) away. To do that, a tornado would need wind speeds of between 204 and 217 mph (328-349 km/h).

Here is a picture of a brick home basically slabbed by the tornado. F/EF5 tornadoes are only capable of doing that. F/EF4s can level homes including brick homes, but they do not slab homes, especially not brick ones. And damage on Southgate Road was catastrophic.

I hope the tornado is given an EF5 rating, because the damage left behind and wind speed recordings deserve the rating.
