Within the week every cafe in the country has gone from limiting patrons at tables to only serving takeaway.
For some this may have been an easy transition. For others, the reality of closing down shop is closer. For Jespresso, it feel like we are on hold.
Every year I write down what goals I want to reach, where I want to be by 2021 but covid-19 has defiantly thrown not only a spanner in the works but the whole tool box.
I am not coping with the sudden changes enforced by the government. For Jake and myself in the shop, we have our daily ritual of the same customers coming in, the same customers sitting around the coffee table and sharing their coffee or muffin with Audrey. These rituals are just as valuable to us as they are for our customers.
Within the week, it all disappeared. Emotionally that has taken a hit on both Jake and myself. Not to mention financially the thousands of dollars of work for the coffee cart I’ve lost.
My biggest worry about the whole situation will be the effect on mental health of everyone. After the worse drought in Australia’s recorded history than bushfires, throw a global pandemic in and see how many of those “strong people” hold it together.
So I’m asking, be kind. All retail and hospitality staff are doing the best they can do with what little security we feel.
