The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2016, a talent show for the younger viewer.
This year's contest was experimental. Sunday afternoon, all done by jury voting, an expert jury containing Christer Björkman (but also Jedward), and it felt like they were pushing the boat a little too far. A small botch from the presenters (which I missed live) killed suspense, and last year's winner Destiny was left hanging around like a spare part.
On the upside, some decent staging, especially NTU's umbrella. And Jedward's wall of selfies showed the BBC's Joe and Jake how the concept is done by professionals.
But oh! the feels! Ewan Spence and the Eurovision Insight team bang on about how these contenders are friends for life, and it absolutely shows. Zena, warrior princess of TG4, was allowed to photobomb everyone, and led the guard when Mariam needed it.
Did the right song win? We have no complaints with the winner, and there's nothing I can say was robbed of victory.
me: i love armenia's junior eurovision song so much, i wish i could sing along...
brain: you can, silly
me: yeah, you're right, i can just find a transliteration
brain: um, no, nitwit, you gotta learn the armenian alphabet
me:
me: you have a point, that makes so much more sense

Hanging out in Valletta during Junior Eurovision
The most beautiful ending of an Eurovision Song Contest ! Mariam Mamadashvili (Georgia) had trouble singing the reprise of her winning song, Mzeo (”Sun”), so the others contestants of the show helped her. Amazing song, amazing voice, and a beautiful spirit !
