Yknow, thinking about how existing cultural phenomenon translate into fictional settings while still staying true to the world and its culture is a good writing exercise! You come up with a ton of new spins on familiar ideas, and doing it well can really help sell your world as being both realistic with a believable evolution of culture and fashion and also new to the audience. Lots of things have existed across cultures and history in slightly different contexts (re: pancakes are the square root of human existence), so it only makes sense that even in this fictional world, certain "modern" ideas might have some kind of fantasy equivalent- like social media being replaced with a local bulletin board or a big wall that people write and draw on in turn. It's fun and immersive, and I recommend everyone try it when considering how their world will work! But sometimes, examining certain phenomenon under the lens of a very specific fictional culture- like one that's meant to turn our idea of normal on its head- can lead to discoveries you aren't really ready for. Sometimes you'll run into an idea that makes absolute perfect sense in world, but which feels incredibly wrong when placed next to the original inspiration. Sometimes, that conclusion will be so horrifically right and wrong as to induce within you a deep, bone crushing despair the likes of which you've never seen nor wish to hold ever again. Sometimes, you will come up with ideas that you must include in your work, but which will sicken you to your core because of how horrifically well they both do and do not line up with your understanding of the world. Needless to say, I was not prepared to come up with the phrase: Jerry Undertale is the monster equivalent of a Gyaru Girl, nor do I ever think I will be.
