She wanted to look more closely at how books began; she had quickly produced over three hundred typed pages, yet she felt that her book never really started.

She finished such books promptly, but she had nothing to say about them. In a school community, someone who reads a book for some secretive purpose, other than discussing it, is strange. What was she reading for?

In this dirty-minded world, she thought, you are either somebody's wife or somebody's whore - or fast on your way of becoming one or the other. If you don't fit either category, then everyone tries to make you think there is something wrong with you. But, she thought, there is nothing wrong with me.

That must be how families are, thought Jenny Fields. She felt if she ever had children she would love them no less when they were twenty than when they were two; they might need you more at twenty, she thought.
