The bronze doors of the entry (23’ high, 20' wide) are held fast by huge iron chains, and all cracks are sealed with soft iron. Graven upon these massive valves are runes. You note that the writing glows and seems to burn with silvery radiance, making your eyes teary.
The Temple of Elemental Evil, module T1-4 by Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer, TSR, 1985. This unsigned illustration probably is by “Jack Fred,” Larry Elmore and Jeff Easley’s pseudonym for their contributions to this module. Gygax probably contributed the archaic term “valves” to mean “double doors” as he did in module G3: The Hall of the Fire Giant King.

Encounters on dungeon level 3 of The Temple of Elemental Evil, module T1-4 by Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer, TSR, 1985: ettin, hill giant, ogre, trolls, gargoyles. I think this is by Jeff Easley; the signature “J Fred” is “Jack Fred,” a pseudonym used by Elmore and Easley that appears throughout this module.
