GUM & Ambrose Kenny-Smith - Ill Times LP
First album of the year, and my favourite album of 2024. It’s exactly what I hoped for, back when they released “Minor Setback” and “Old Transistor Radio back on Record Store Day 2023. Danceable” alternative pop, punchy and home made feeling, without being too rough around the edges. Jay and Ambrose have perfectly matching songwriting styles, and Ambrose sits right in Jay’s production style as if they’ve been making music together for decades. And “The Gloater” shows they also have great vocal chemistry too. Hopefully if they make a second album, we get to hear more duets.
The vinyl itself sounds great, very clear and punchy, very little surface noise too. My edition is a cool smoky mix of greys, though I almost wish I went with the classic black vinyl, that suits the album too. Overall the vinyl is nothing crazy, but the album still shines through it, so it’s far from a let down.
