Java Fern Vs Amazon Sword: Which Plant Is Best For You?
Java Fern vs Amazon Sword – which aquarium plant is really better for your tank? 🌱🐟 In this video I break down the key differences between these two popular plants so you can decide which one fits your setup best.
Amazon Sword (Echinodorus bleheri) is often considered one of the most beginner-friendly aquarium plants. It grows quickly, sends out big, lush leaves, and easily fills the background of medium to large aquariums. Many hobbyists love it because it’s reliable and hardy. However, Amazon Sword can get huge—over 20 inches tall in some tanks—so it’s best to plan ahead if you don’t want it overshadowing everything else. With regular trimming, though, it can become the perfect centerpiece plant that makes your aquascape look full and vibrant.
Java Fern, on the other hand, has a reputation as beginner-friendly, but in my experience it can be a little tricky. Sometimes it thrives in low-tech tanks without added CO₂, while other times it mysteriously melts away. After some trial and error, I’ve noticed that potassium deficiency or poor water flow around the rhizome might be the cause. The good news is that trimming older leaves and supplementing potassium—either with aquarium fertilizers or even shrimp foods like blanched spinach—can really turn things around.
When Java Fern is happy, it’s fantastic. You can attach it to driftwood or rocks, it doesn’t need to be buried in substrate, and it adds beautiful texture without overtaking your tank the way Amazon Sword can. It’s slower growing, making it easier to manage if you don’t want to constantly trim.
So which should you choose? If you’re brand new to planted aquariums, Amazon Sword is the safer, low-maintenance option. But if you’re looking for something that grows slower, adds detail to your hardscape, and you don’t mind a little extra care, Java Fern is worth the effort.
