Trying to figure out why I'm so compelled by jasprose's character when I'm pretty neutral on rose, and I think it's because jasprose's issues with identity. Like, this is a girl who has lost EVERYTHING. Her girlfriend, her friends, her mother, her life. She's given a second chance as a sprite, but her relationships with the people she knew are never going to be the same. They're only going to see her as rose 2.0, and as a light player, she knows this very, very, well. So what does she do? She pivots HARD in the opposite direction, and immediately starts trying to build an identity separate from rose. Something I feel like most people miss when looking at jasprose is that her personality... isn't real. It's an act. Think about all the people before her who've gotten fused with animals; davesprite, jade, gcattavros, aradiasprite. None of their personalities were changed by fusing with animals. At MOST, they felt the occasional urge to make animal noises, but none of them started acting like totally different people. Jasprose is Like That because she's trying to establish her own identity and personhood outside of rose. Rose is sarcastic, elegant, put together, while jasprose acts the exact opposite; unfiltered, chaotic, incredibly outward with her emotions. There's no way you could mix them up, right? Right? Something I find extremely interesting about jasprose's persona is that rose is also hiding things about herself. She has a hidden silly side that she often keeps to herself. It's literally stated that jasprose is saying out loud all the thoughts that rose keeps to herself. So jasprose is weaponizing that hidden side, pushing it to an extreme, using it to hide herself instead of being genuine. It's not just personality that jasprose tries to separate herself with, it's relationships as well. The whole reason she revives nepeta is so she has someone to be close with as jasprose, not rose. Her kanaya is dead, the one in this timeline is taken, and all her friends see her as just a copy of "the real rose". By reviving nepeta, she could have someone all to herself, a fresh start with no baggage, who would see her as a real person. A replica of all her lost relationships, especially kanaya (even if it somewhat negates nepeta's own autonomy and personhood). And she loses that, too, before it has a chance to even start. She's an incredibly complex and tragic character, and I'm shocked more people aren't interested in her (no I'm not. This fandom hates women.). There are a million equally interesting paths to take while exploring her character: her relationship with june (who's from her timeline), her relationship with roxy (also from her original timeline, who she gave up her life to save, along with rose's already present mommy issues), her alcoholism (unlike the other rose, she never got sober!), her relationship with nepeta (please god I need their codependent toxic yuri so so badly), her relationship with vriska (two light players after the story has ended. What do you do when there's no more need for relevance? How will you act when your no longer playing the part of a character in a story, but an actual person, not a plot device? Do you hate being important to the narrative? Do you want it's attention back? Both? What do you do when you encounter someone with similar issues but different opinions on the matter? Vriska was the one to get rose to stop drinking in this timeline, will she do it again? I'm picturing pale/pitch quadrant blurring SEE MY VISION PLEASEEEE), and of course, her relationship with kanaya and rose (there is an incredible fic on ao3 called leviathan (or the fervor in women gone awry) on this topic. It's genuinely incredible, and is probably my favorite homestuck fic EVER. Please go read it I'm begging you. God I love jasprose so much I hope this has convinced you to love her too, I need to see more of her pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee
