Jared and Gilf are partnered up for a project and Gilf comes over to Jared’s house to work on it and keeps trying to find excuses to stay later and when Jared asks him about it Gilfoyle says something about Jared’s moms being really nice and his own parents being less nice and Jared says “listen, if you need a place to spend the night I’m sure Gin and Toni would let you stay in the guest room” and Gilf says something about how he doesn’t care and he can tough it out, but Jared talks to his moms and Gin comes to talk to Gilfoyle and says “listen kiddo if you want to spend the night here we’ve got a perfectly good guest room and we have guests like once in a blue moon, you can stay here.” 

and Gilfoyle grudgingly agrees to spend the night, and has dinner with Gin and Toni and Jared, which is so weird for him cause he’s never had a proper family dinner where his parents ask him about his life, but here he is with Jared’s moms and Gin is asking him about his favorite bands and telling him about sneaking out to go to concerts as a kid, and Toni’s asking about his favorite subjects in school and offering to put him in touch with someone she knows at MIT. And maybe he borrows some of Jared’s clothes so he’s not going to school in the same clothes the next day, and after school he finds Jared and tentatively asks “hey, can I...spend the night again?”

and eventually he starts moving some of his stuff over to Gin and Toni’s house and they informally adopt him and he and Jared grow up like brothers and it’s GOOD

The farm belonged to Jared’s friend Norman, a snarky Hippie Old Gay whom Jared met on a birdwatching trip. Norman’s husband died of cancer a few years after Jared met both of them, and after that Jared started making time in his schedule to drive down to the farm once or twice a week to help Norman out. When Norman died, he left the farm/winery to Jared and it just stood there for a while because Jared had no time for it.

But eventually Pied Piper folds, or Richard sells to Hooli and Jared, Dinesh, and Gilfoyle all cash out and quit. And then they sort of sit around Jared’s condo like “well what the fuck do we do now??” and then Jared says “I have a farm out in wine country, we could…live there for a while, until you guys figure something out. I own it outright so it would be way cheaper than living here.”

Gilfoyle says “Yeah sure, I’ll do some farm work, it’ll be fun.”Dinesh is a little more hesitant but then Jared mentions the winery and Dinesh is like “FUCK YES I’M IN.”

So they go out there and resurrect the farm - they clear the weeds and replant and Jared gets some goats and sheep to raise for wool and milk (goat milk has less lactose than cow milk so he can actually drink it without getting sick! Or at least, not as horribly sick!)

It’s supposed to be temporary, but after about a year Dinesh and Gilfoyle stop thinking about startup ideas and start enjoying the farm. Jared knits all of them sweaters from the wool from their sheep, and Dinesh tastes the wines and negotiates with local shops and restaurants to sell it.

Eventually the farm starts being actually profitable (and more so than Pied Piper) and Jared brings up the idea of fostering kids. To their own great surprise Dinesh and Gilfoyle agree, and Jared gets in touch with a social worker about getting approved to foster.

Their farm turns into a foster home that provides much-needed nature therapy for traumatized teenagers. Jared knits every single kid a comfy sweater, teaches them how to milk goats and shear sheep, makes sure they go to school and do their homework and eat their vegetables, and tucks them in every night. He basically gives them the home he never had.

Dinesh and Gilf are more like the “cool uncles” - they play video games with the kids, and watch sci fi/fantasy movies and show them where the hidden candy stash is.
