Okay, so I really have no clue how to describe this world because there’s so much going on (in a very very good way), and in my opinion it’s best to just walk into it blind. So, without giving too much away, it’s basically an urban fantasy with a magical twist of ancient court systems based off of Tarot cards. We start off following our protagonist, Rune, who is the heir from the fallen Sun Court as he helps to facilitate the destruction of another court, and then gets hired to search for a missing person who’s vanished under suspicious circumstances, all whilst battling this monster rampaging the city. The novel is really nicely paced with a plot that keeps the reader guessing and doesn’t drag itself out, with a satisfying ending that made me pick up the next book straight away. The characters are really well crafted and their relationships are so genuine that you can’t help but care for them. There is a m/m relationship that develops (yay lgbtq+ rep!) but by no means does that make the book become a romance fantasy; Rune’s priorities remain the same, with the romance only sweetening the plot further. Whilst it is a little confusing to understand everything at the start at it was initially à bit difficult to get over the first person narration, but I carried on and before I knew it I was halfway through the book and addicted. :)

You can feel the care that’s been put into the novel and its extremely refreshing, I cannot emphasise how unique I found this world and I cannot wait for more.
Not a lot. Again, my only slight issue was at the start where there’s so much going on that its quite confusing to understand the meaning behind what’s being said and done, but that quickly vanished the more I got into the book. And, for me, that confusion is only due to the fact that it was my first time being exposed to such à vibrant world- I’m sadly far more used to authors explaining everything on à silver platter within the first pages and it was great to figure things out for myself. I know for a fact that when I read this again I will appreciate the beginning far more!

Rune was raped on the evening of the fall of his father’s court by multiple men; there are some flashbacks and discussions on it, especially as things heat up between his love interest, but (again, this is only my opinion, so read with caution) the recovery, expectations and boundaries were handled well.
