So @janetm74fics and I (#bloody idiots) both decided to answer Prompt #199 from @belovedwhump.
đŹ 0  đ 10  â€ïž 39 · Beloved Whump Prompt #199 · "There's blood on the floor-!"
"I'm aware of that, thank you."
"Your blood is on the floor.
"There's blood on the floor."
The young, factory technician with wide, brown eyes and a ponytail looked to be somewhere around Alanâs age. White knuckled fingers clutching a data pad against her chest, she stared down at Scott in absolute horror.
"I'm aware of that, thank you,â Scott replied carefully from his prone position on the cold, concrete, factory floor. He raised his voice slightly to make certain she could hear him above the hiss of ruptured steam pipes. âAre you alright?â
"Your blood is on the floor." Her gaze remained fixed on the pool of thick, red liquid slowly spreading out around him.
"Yes, we've already established that,â IRâs commander reminded her calmly. âIâll be fine. Iâm not in a position to help you right now but my team is on their way.â
"Why is your blood on the floor?â
Scott let his eyelids fall shut, just for an instant. Keeping up the reassuring patter of conversation was becoming almost more than he could handle. Minutes ago, when a massive, overhead crane in the manufacturing plant had collapsed, sections of jagged metal had pinned him to the floor. Scott wasnât able to raise his head far enough to assess the damage, but a floaty feeling combined with the throbbing agony in his right thigh told him he was losing blood much faster than Virgil would approve of.
"Scott! Can you hear me?" The baritone roar of IRâs medic blew through comms, accompanied by the screech of buckled factory doors being violently forced open. Taking a shaky breath, Scott let it hiss out slowly through gritted teeth. His brother was here and he could afford to relinquish just the tiniest bit of control.
Virgil burst into the space, face blanching when he laid eyes on his older brother prone on the floor with crimson blood hemorrhaging from a deep laceration on his upper thigh. The pool of bright, red liquid was deep enough to splash when the medicâs knees hit it, the medkit thudding onto unbloodied concrete next to him.
"Scott, do not try to move. Please, just this once, listen to me,â he pleaded, snapping on a pair of latex gloves.
"Not moving, Virg," Scott ground out, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. He was breathing through his nose in short, ragged bursts, fighting to keep his expression neutral. The sweat beading on his forehead and his white-knuckled grip on a piece of nearby scrap metal gave him away. Scott was hurting big time.
"Sâeveryone ⊠safe?" he whispered.
Alan skidded through the mangled doors, his gaze flicking back and forth between Scott and the terrified technician. It was clear that Virgil had Scott and as much as he longed to join them training took over and he turned his full attention to the trembling, young woman. Murmuring reassurances he took her arm gently, guiding her around debris towards the doors.
"The factoryâs clear, you got almost everybody out," Virgil reassured. âAlanâs helping the last one now.â His face crumpled. âIâm sorry, Scotty.â
Without hesitation Virgil pressed his palms directly over the wound, leaning in with his full body weight. Scott, well aware of what was coming, didn't scream. Instead, a violent, full-body shudder racked his frame. He let out a sharp, choked hiss, every muscle in his body corded with tension as the pressure of Virgilâs grip slowed the immediate rush of blood.
"Gordon, I need a pneumatic tourniquet. Move!"
"On it, Virg!" Gordonâs voice crackled in Virgilâs helmet as he raced toward Thunderbird Two.
"Don't⊠look at me like that," Scott rasped, gripping the sleeve of Virgil's uniform with unexpected strength, glassy eyes doing their best to focus. Signs of severe shock were setting in rapidly.
"Hey. Eyes on me, big brother," Virgil ordered softly, maintaining the constant, unrelenting pressure because he had no other choice.
"Mâtired, VirgâŠ" Scott breathed, eyelids drooping.
"I know you are. Just hold on. For me."
Gordon was suddenly there, sliding across the dusty, concrete floor, tearing open a sealed packet. "Tourniquet ready," he reported, expression rigid in rescue focus as he positioned it around Scottâs thigh.
âHigher,â Virgil instructed.
A low, guttural groan tore from Scottâs throat as the tourniquet unsympathetically clamped down, completely halting the severe, arterial flow. His back arched slightly off the concrete, hands grasping at air before he forced himself back down, panting heavily, chest heaving. Gordon secured the tourniquet in place, the exact application time blinking digitally on the fastening strap.
In cautious, slow motion Virgil removed his hands, sagging back onto his calves with relief. Scott was shivering violently, Gordon quick to wrap the laceration and tuck an emergency blanket around their commander. Alan raced up with an anxious expression and a hovering stretcher.
Virgil pushed himself to his feet, assessing the section of metal that pinned his brother. âI can lift this safely,â he concluded, after examining the wreckage of the crane from all angles. âI wonât be able to hold it for long. Gords, Al, get ready to slide Scott out.â
By the time the big man had positioned himself, boots planted exactly where they needed to be, Gordon gave him a sharp nod. âOn three,â he counted down. âOne, two, three âŠâ
Virgil shouted as he strained to lift the heavy steel, the muscles and tendons in his arms and shoulders bunching and stretching against his neoprene uniform. âNow!â he grunted, squinching his eyes shut as perspiration rolled down his forehead and dripped from his eyelashes.
âClear!â Alan shouted.
Virgil let go and stepped back. Metal met concrete in a deafening clatter of sound and a cloud of dust. Everyone but Virgil held their breath as the wreckage of the crane shifted above them before settling back into place. The medic was already down on one knee, checking on his older brother.
Chestnut lashes fluttered. "Great job you guys," Scott whispered, the hint of an exhausted smile tugging his lips.
"Save it for the mission debrief, Commander,â Virgil whispered, glancing up at his younger brothers with a nod of reassurance. âLetâs get you out of here.â

Scott was whistling quietly as he moved around the apartment, packing clothes and gifts into the two small bags on his bed.
In the kitchen Brains wasâŠtinkering. It wasnât anything specific, not yet anyway, just something to keep his hands busy while his brain tried to work out how heâd gotten into this situation.
Heâd known Scott Tracy for all of three months. In that time heâd gone from 20 years living in Cambridge and then Oxford and not ever travelling outside of those two cities to explore the rest of the country to flying to America for Thanksgiving and nowâŠ
His hand slipped and the screwdriver scraped along his index finger and Brains cursed.
âC-C-Curses!â
âBrains, you ok in there?â
And Scott was there, gently pulling his hands apart and examining the gash. He grabbed tissues, wiped away the blood and tsked.
âNo need for anything worse than a Band-Aid.â
Brains was more amused than anything else.
These last three months heâd gone from being completely alone to suddenly finding he had been enfolded into a Very Loud, Very American family via this five-years-younger-than-him blue-eyed Math genius whoâd rescued him from the fountain heâd been dumped in by the jocks, picked him up, insisted that he move in with him once heâd seen the tiny studio flat Brains had, and then had flown him to America â in a private jet of all things â and introduced him to his father.
His father.
Jeff Tracy.
Who had been at first bemused by the excitement Scott had shown over his rough idea of a Mach 21 engine, had listened intently to him and before the dinner was served had already offered him a job once his latest degree was finishedâŠ
He had gone from Hiram Hackenbacker to âBrainsâ in less than an hour, and even Scott began to call him that despite initially correcting everyone. Hiram had never been given a nice nickname beforeâŠhe quite liked it.
Heâd thought that that was it â Scott and he had returned to Oxford, England and both carried on classes until it was time for the Christmas break.
Brains had planned a quiet few days at home in Cambridge with his adopted father â if *he* could be dragged away from his work â and to concentrate on his engine plans now that Mr Tracy had promised an investment of both interest and money.
Scott had no idea of Brainsâ plans, but in typical Scott-fashion he had already promised his Dad that Brains would be with him for Christmas at the Creighton-Ward manor. And heâd proceeded to explain to Brains why he absolutely needed to attendâŠand Brains began to nod in agreement.
So here he was, watching Scott bandage his finger while waiting for some kind of driver called âParkerâ to arrive and pick them up.
âIs whatever youâre working on ok?â
âItâs fine.â
He watched as Scott picked up what heâd been working on, looking it over before handing it back to him with a lopsided grin.
âNice servos. You should show Virgil. Heâd love this.â
âD-D-Do you know what it is?â
âNope. But I know engineering when I see it. And I promise that Virgil will speak your language.â
âO-O-Okay. I look forward to discussing M-M-MAX with him.â
âMax?â
Brains reached out and took the housing off Scott with a shy grin. He took a small data chip housed in a protective case out of his pocket and held it up to show Scott.
âM-M-MAX m-m-meet Scott.â
Scottâs grin grew wider and he waved at the chip.
âHi Max! I look forward to meeting you properly.â
A car horn sounded and Scott practically jogged to the window, pulled back the curtain and waved.
âThatâs Parker. Letâs go!â
And before Brains could blink Scott had grabbed his own bags, Brainsâ bag and was holding the door open with his hip, hopping from foot to foot like he always did when he was excited about something.
Brainsâ put MAX back in his pocket, grabbed the box of bits and pieces heâd been working through, threw in his lucky screwdriver and followed Scott out the door.
And stopped short at the sight of a shockingly bright pink Rolls Royce.
Parker had taken their bags and stored them in the back and was currently holding the door open for him, Scott already having taken his seat.
âP-P-PinkâŠâ
âYes, Sir.â
âPi-Pi-Pink.â
âIndeed. May hâI take hâyawr box?â
âPink. ErâŠthank you?â
Brains blinked rapidly as his box was gently removed from his arms and placed on the seat beside Scott and he slid onto the seat.
He was still blinking when they drove off, the pink having absolutely short-fused his brain. Scott laughed and settled back to enjoy the ride and with a start Brains realised he was talking, but Brains hadnât heard a thing. He relaxed back and picked up the tiny casing heâd put together and carried right on working, thinking that it was a great start for MAX.
They travelled for a couple of hours â not that Brains realised that much time had passed â and suddenly the door was being held open and Brains was once again blinking at the change of scenery as he climbed out of the car. Scott slipped out beside him and waved before grabbing his arm and dragging him up the stairs.
On the top of the short staircase stood a girl, somewhat younger than Scott but not by much. He watched as Scott grabbed her around the waist and swung her around to giggling and a fake-outraged *âput me down, Scott Tracy, you heathen,â* and then Brains was shaking hands with a Lady.
âMr Hackenbacker, welcome. I am Penelope Creighton-Ward, but you can call me Penny.â
âTh-Th-Thank you. Please c-c-call me Brains.â
âBrains then. Parker will show you both to your rooms and give you some time to freshen up. Scott â your father has messaged to say theyâll be here in around an hour.â
âGreat! Lead on, Parker.â
âVery good, Master Scott.â
There was something amusing in what Parker had said and Brains had no idea what it was, but there were twinkles in both menâs eyes. Brains didnât ask what was going on, just followed the two up the stairs to his room (which was thankfully not pink) and he took his time unpacking his bag. He placed his box on the table, wondering if heâd even get the chance to use anythingâŠ
Whether he was to return downstairs now or later was solved by Scott knocking on his door. Once Brains opened to him Scott threw himself onto one of the chairs â this whole bedroom was larger than Brainsâ studio flat! â and grinned.
âYouâll like Penny. Sheâs fun.â
âFunâ was not a word Brains would have used of a younger member of the opposite sex let alone a member of the aristocracyâŠthis was a completely foreign concept for him. He resolved to follow Scottâs lead â although he didnât think that heâd be picking Penny up and swinging her around by her waistâŠ
Brains flushed scarlet at the thought.
âIs she alone here?â
âNah, her Dad will be back tomorrow.â
âOh g-g-good.â
âYou ready to explore?â
âExplore?â
âYes! I need to show you how to get around, where the kitchen is and the dining room and the like. Although Penny will tell you to just pull the bell cord if you need anything and Parker will sort it out for you.â
He wasnât sure if Scott was joking or not until the man sprang from the chair to show the yellow embroidered chord hanging beside the ornate fireplace.
âOh. Y-Y-Yes please, I would l-l-like to know my way around.â
They spent some time exploring. Scott introduced him to the cook, Lillian, who pressed a cup of tea into his hands, and then he followed his friend around the large mansion.
Time flew and the next thing he knew the main door was opening and a 7-year-old blonde whirlwind had almost knocked him over in his haste to get to Scott, who swung him into the air before settling him on his shoulders.
And Brains jumped aside as a second blonde crashed into Scottâs legs, almost toppling him if it hadnât been for the black haired one Brains recalled as being called Virgil racing around to brace Scott from behind in an obviously well-rehearsed manoeuvre.
Then John was there, standing beside his brothers but not engaging in any horseplay, and Penny was nudging John with a smile and Brains remembered how loud they all were together.
âBrains! So glad you could make it!â
And Mr Tracy was shaking his hand before moving forward into the house, trailing children in his wake. And then came Parker with his arms loaded down.
It was organised chaos.
They settled into the large sitting room. Parker had laid the fire before leaving to pick up Scott and Brains, and it was now roaring away. The Tracys settled around it, John sitting the closest  and Brains watching in amusement as he shed the many layers he was wearing. Scott settled in the middle of one couch and was immediately swamped by Alan on one side and Gordon on the other, the two youngest talking over themselves to Scott, who was somehow able to hear both of them and hold two conversations at once.
Virgil and Mr Tracy settled with him and seamlessly continued the conversation they had left at Thanksgiving, asking about his doctorate and any further designs that he had planned. It could have been an excellent point to bring MAX out and the housing heâd just began to make. But he hadnât grabbed either, and to leave now would be rude, so Brains contented himself with discussing the refinements heâd been making on the Mach 21 engine heâd been designing when heâd met Scott on that fateful day.
Conversations flowed â something that still surprised Brains as heâd not ever experienced this level of ease in likeâŠforever â and pretty soon the day had turned into evening and Parker was ushering them into the dining room for dinner.
Just as they were seated at dinner what Brains assumed was the front door sounded and Parker left to answer it. It explained why there was a spare seat at the table between Scott and John, and not too long after Parker arrived and announced their guest.
âMiss Kyrano.â
âMiss Kyranoâ turned out to be the girl Brains had only seen via holo on Scottâs watch and had been introduced to him as âKayoâ and as their sister. Brains had been confused about her absence when the rest of the Tracys came together but seeing her in the flesh made him realise that she must be adopted, and his heart swelled at such a generous family.
All the boysâ faces lit up at her appearance, and once more chatter flowed easily as a three-course meal was consumed by all. Brains couldnât remember the last time heâd eaten so much but he was pleasantly full of food and good company, and by the time they all returned to the sitting room he was nodding off.
He hadnât even noticed the large Christmas tree in the back corner of the room until Alan and Gordon began clamouring to open one present. He watched in amusement as Mr Tracy pulled out a huge bag of gifts and began arranging them around the base. Scott pulled a bag out that heâd hidden earlier and joined him.
Alan and Gordon fairly bounced on the sidelines, watching closely as the presents piled up.
Eventually the tree had an impressive pile beneath it and everyone sat back down, this time Scott with John, Virgil and himself, and Mr Tracy with Gordon, Alan and Kayo. Penny was seated on a chair beside the couch and was quietly chatting with John.
âPlease, Dad! Please can weâŠâ
Mr Tracy laughed and pretended to think about it as Scott explained that it had been a family tradition that they could all open just one present on Christmas Eve.
âAlright. One present only. But!â
The two youngsters waited for him to carry on, almost bursting at the seams with excitement.
âYou must hand out one present for everyone present first before you can open your own.â
âCool!â
âOk!â
There was much amusement as the pair ran back and forth between the couches and the tree but eventually everyone but Brains had a gift in their hands.
Alan looked at Brains, a small frown on his face.
âYou donât have a gift. Why donât you have a gift? Why doesnât Brains have a gift?â
That last sentence was addressed to Scott, an accusing tone in his voice. Scott smiled but didnât answer him, instead leaving it for Brains to explain.
âI d-d-donât celebrate Chr-Chr-Christmas.â
âYou donât? Why not?â
âAlanâŠâ
âNo, I d-d-donât mind. I was r-r-raised Hindu. We d-d-donât celebrate this religious d-d-day, but we celebrate many others.â
âOh. I thought everyone celebrated Christmas.â
âSorry, Sprout. Not everyone does.â
âI donât either, not really.â
Kayoâs warm voice filled the pause as Alan took this new information in. He looked from Brains to Kayo in confusion.
âButâŠI donât understand.â
âBrains doesnât celebrate Christmas because he is a different religion. I was also brought up in a different religion but I choose to buy you all gifts. It doesnât mean I actually celebrate Christmas though. Not everyone you meet will celebrate, Alan.â
âOh.â
The blonde thought for a moment, shrugged his shoulders and sat back next to his Dad. Mr Tracy nodded approvingly at Kayo and she blushed slightly. Brains wanted to thank her for explaining it so well but a knock at the door had him pausing, especially when Penny frowned.
âIâm not expecting anyone else,â she said, looking to Parker who totally failed to keep his face expressionless.
âOh, sorry, Penelope. That would be me.â
âJeff?â
âThis one is a gift for Kayo.â
Kayo stared at Jeff, and Brains found himself holding his breath. Everyoneâs eyes followed Parker as he left and opened the door. Everyone strained to hear what was being said as footsteps and very quiet voices got closer.
And then the door opened and a man stood on the threshold.
âAyah?â
âMy blessing.â
âAyah!â
And Kyrano was hugging his daughter tightly while mouthing âthank youâ to Jeff.
âI know you donât celebrate, Kayo, but I hope you donât mind this gift I got for you.â
She turned to Jeff, still holding onto her father tightly, and gestured for him to come over, and Kayo enfolded him into the hug too. The Tracy boys werenât too far behind until only Brains, Penny and Parker were left.
Penny turned to Brains and laid a hand on his forearm.
âWelcome to the Tracy family and friends, Mr Hackenbacker. We are most wonderfully blessed to have them.â

Inspired by one of the lines in @teapotteringabout looking for atlantis, Marina's first flight!...spoiler she's not enjoying it
âSmooth take off." Troy had said after the most bumpy world shaky feeling Marina had ever experienced. including several whirlpools and Stingray crashes. The wings bounced for sea's sake!
This installment found a place in the tapestry of a vaster story, thanks to the amazing insight of @janetm74, making the implications so much more exciting to ponder and to explore further!
(Page Six)
Ever since Kat Kavanaugh buried a hatchet and wasn't chasing conspiracy theories about them on Global Holovision anymore, watching the news live was a once in a blue moon activity in Casa Tracy. They followed the major world events through John and Eos (maybe a bit of social media on a relatively quiet morning), and they were likely to be part of those in some capacity at least a third of the times. Sometimes a half.
But it was one of those days. A relative lull in rescues compiled with the exhaustion of the previous fortnight streak of disasters bred mildly numb boredom. Batteries too low to pursue their usual hobbies, they gravitated to the lounge.
Scott was ever at the desk with holo screens full of quarterly budget reports, because their biggest brother did stock market numbers for LEISURE, apparently. Virgil was playing, as usual, but the music was slowly fading to a halt. Alan was gaming, or pretending to be while napping, his VR goggles on. Kayo was going through some specs, half leaning on the couch cushions. Even John was in a quiet lull up in orbit, his hologram just bobbing at the comms unit, hanging out with everybody, but not really a part of any conversation.
That left Gordon scralling lazily through newsreels. The sudden yelp sent Alan tumbling on the floor and Scott at least half an inch closer to a cardiac arrest under thirty. A keen observer would have noticed Kayo reaching for a knife in the ankle holster. The piano music keened on an abrupt note and stopped. Several pairs of VERY unamused eyes stared Gordon down.
The Fish was on his feet already, bursting with excitement, sending the news holo to the center of the lounge.
"Did you guys know Fischler has a brother?!?!"
The assorted grumps and groans across the lounge indicated that they not only didn't know, but weren't in the least thrilled by that information.
Only John and Kayo shared a quiet look, because OF COURSE they would know.
Gordon surveyed the lounge in triumph, setting the stage for a punchline.
"He has a brother and he's getting married!"
"Who, Fischler?"
Alan was still scrambling up from his hardwood landing and making a show of rubbing an ouchie. Scott at least looked ready to switch gears to the full "hurt brother!" mode. Gordon was not deterred.
"No, dummy, not Fischer! His brother is getting married!"
"And that's any of our business how?"
Alan was still not ready to relinquish attention from his boo-boo. Not with so many big brothers in attendance. But John, Kayo and Virgil were already sharing concerned LOOKS.
Any widely publicized event with cameras rolling and hundreds in attendance, involving Fischler, could potentially turn into a showcase of his latest "invention", or ten. Which would mean potential casualties and work for IR. They would need to be on the look-out and on standby. Scott waved at the comm to get the volume up.
The holo displayed a close pic of a younger and significantly more polished version of Langstrom Fischler, hair sleecked back, but a weaselly smile just a tad on the manic side.
The picture on the screen changed to an official GDF snapshot of a tall young brunette in dress blues. The insignia on the collar indicated the rank of Captain and breastplanks - several high ranking awards for valor. The picture switched to a series of candid paparazzi snaps of the "happy couple".
The show host droned on with one corny cliche after another about the "match made of dreams" and a " high profile dream wedding" scheduled to take place on a cozy remote island.
Gordon interrupted the stream of saccharine platitudes:
"Huh? How come we're not invited? Scott, you know like everyone in the World Senate!"
His voice was drowned out by the deafening snap of the metal stylus, broken in Scott's fingers. The sound of the desk chair hitting the floor, as Scott stood up and all but ran from the lounge, was even louder.
"Huh?!"
Gordon, yet again, surmised the bewilderment of everyone present.
Jade eyes squinted a fraction as Kayo watched Scott's outburst and hasty retreat.
Virgil was half out to follow Scott, when a ping came through on Gordon's comm. The sign flashed pink.
"Yay! Looks like I'm going after all! Penny needs a plus one! John, can I borrow your tax?!"
John half waved his brother off, brows furrowed and hands already flying over invisible files, when another pink ping came through. It was Kayo's turn for a "Huh?" moment.
"Looks like Penny needs a plus two, as well. I'm invited".
That deflated Gordon's initial excitement enough to notice Virgil leaving in the general direction of Dad's office, where Scott had locked himself.
Before Virgil reached the door to try and reason with big brother to talk about... whatever that was, John sent two files to his comm.
The other Virgil never saw before. It would figure since it was a screenshot from, what he recognized with some dread, was Dad's old phone. There was a picture sent to a private chat with Dad of the same girl, in a sundress, and Scott in a polo shirt, apparently both on leave. An almost ten years younger Scott was smiling like he could power up a sun. The message to Dad read "SHE SAID YES!!!".
The date of the message indicated about a month and a half before Scott's mission to Bereznik.
Virgil sank to the floor, leaning on the wall, never going through with the knock on the locked office door.
There was nothing surreal about the hard edges of Mom's ring she just gave him back.
For about six weeks he was the happiest man alive. Dad's IR project was well underway, and he was to share that dream not only with Dad and brothers, but with the love of his life. He should have known better...
The words were real too - hard and ruthless. About Dad yanking his leash, and expecting nothing but dutiful following in his footsteps and his vision, concealed by his looming shadow, and giving up what they both dreamed about and worked so hard for - test flights, command ranks, career in service.
The echo came back to him often, in one dark hour or another, after his world shattered to pieces yet another time.
Dad voiced his reservations clearly, but did agree to give him Mom's ring. "When you know, you know". Wasn't it how he and Mom got married?
It WAS too soon, they WERE too young, and frateenization within a unit WAS an issue, but with IR lifting off that wasn't to be a problem, once he told her the full scale of the classified project. He should have known better...
He last remembered the ring yanked off his neck with the dogtags chain by a smirking Berezniki guard.
He put up a hell of a fight for that and was beaten within an inch of his life. The first time.
Next time he found it, inexplicably, in Dad's safe on the island, after the search for Zero-X was called off. He meant to ask Kyrano, as he wasn't conscious or coherent enough for the extraction op, or for months after, but the man never returned his calls anymore, sending in a resignation after half a year of following leads on the Hood.
There wasn't much room in his mind or hours in his days to give it more thought for years after. Or more pieces for his heart to break into. He should have known better.
And now she was getting married. To someone bright and promising, changing the world for the better, who wasn't him. The story of his life!
He should have known better as well.
The sound of glass shattering against the wall and a visceral scream finally sent Virgil in, wild-eyed, breaking past the lock.
***
John lifted an eyebrow in a perfect quizzical arch, putting the tablet down, as the "wedding party" poured, or rather, limped into the lounge.
Gordon's tuxedo sleeve was torn clear off, his bowtie, undone, served as a makeshift tourniquet. Parker sported cuts, bruises and a glorious shiner. Penelope's elaborate updo was in disarray, one heel of a golden pump broken. Kayo's slip dress hem was torn, exposing a garter holster.
As John hurried to the kitchen for the first aid kit, he heard her hiss something to the effect of "You should have seen the other guys".
The villa was quiet. Grandma had Alan on the mainland for the weekend. Virgil chased Scott up the volcano. There was a good chance biggest brother and his stormy mood was best quarantined at the Round House for the rest of the day.
John was waiting in the lounge for the fallout, one way or another. He wasn't quite prepared for the sight on display, handing out ice packs.
Gordon hissed too and bit off a curse, as John set about cleaning the bullet graze on his arm.
"Pen, do all your friends whip out a standard issue gun at the altar and read the groom Miranda rights instead of vows?"
Lady Penelope was busy trying to look poised while breaking the second heel off a designer pump, to make them even.
"It was a deep undercover mission to round up a drug and slave trafficking ring. A destination wedding was a most fortunate venue for the occasion."
Kayo looked up from the kitchen isle at that, not pausing to stop extracting a considerable arsenal of throw-knives from her bodice.
"Looks like the Fischler brothers were bankrolled by mafia. The crazy inventions AND the World Senate election. In exchange for some... perks."
Kayo snorted and went back to her inventory of weapons.
Gordon perked up as the anesthetic cream kicked in and forgot to NOT wave the injured hand around to assist his narrative.
"It was actually kinda cool! The bride barked out "Hands up!" instead of "I do"! The bridesmaids all dropped their bouquets and brandished guns. The bridal party were all Organized Crime and Counterterrorism. Well, and us... A little heads up wouldn't have hurt, Penny. Then all hell broke loose. Rose petals and confetti everywhere. You should have seen Fischler's face!"
Gordon was nearly flailing with excitement, so John's hands pushed him mildly back into the seat. Turquoise eyes found Penelope's line of sight, studiously avoiding Kayo:
"So... no wedding?"
"No wedding indeed."
Up on the Tracy Volcano Virgil's comm vibrated, switched to silent mode hours ago. John's message read "No wedding."
Virgil exhaled a sigh, but didn't yet know how to break the subject with a brother, seated next to him on the sun-warmed boulder, overlooking the ocean. Blue eyes were fixed on a point far away in the distance, or maybe far away in the past, Scott still wouldn't talk about.Â
Hellooooo! Thank you for the ask! This one fought me hard so I hope it reads okay and that it (kind of) fits the prompt!
(#13: Lean On Me from 30 Gentle Prompts)
Poolside
The pastels of dawn finally broke and gave way to the rising sun. Warm golden rays were cast down onto the island and, in the distance, above the crashing of the waves below, distinctive chatter of seabirds filled the morning air.
Having been so used to the silent solitude of orbit, by the cacophony of singing birds had woken John up early than usual.Â
Not that he was complaining. One of the only things he missed about being earth-side was being one with nature.Â
For a while, John remained laying in bed. With his eyelids closed, he listened to the symphony that was being played beyond his window in contentment. He could have stayed there all day but he eventually grew restless and pulled himself out from under his sheets.
So used to suiting up at a momentâs notice for his work, it took John very little time to get ready for the day. He was dressed and presentable within minutes. Before he left the solitude of his room, he grabbed one of his cameras; if he was up this early, he might as well take the opportunity to shoot some shots.
He traipsed down to the kitchen, being as quiet as his stumbling legs would allow him to be so he wouldnât wake the rest of his family. A couple of his brothers, he knew, would already have been awake, but the rest of the household deserved all the rest they could get. It had been a difficult week readjusting Dad back into life back on Earth. The break they had requested from the GDF â or rather had asserted the organisation was going to be taking â had been desperately needed.Â
Johnâs idea had been to grab a quick morning snack before heading out onto the peaks but, as he entered the kitchen and noticed the small figure sitting alone on the edge of the pool, Johnâs plan quickly changed.
He abandoned the idea of breakfast and stepped out onto the cool concrete of the patio. If the sun hadnât yet risen and the darkness of night had still been reigning supreme, John might have mistaken him for Gordon. But, as the golden rays shone down onto Alan, they made him look like the kid he still barely was.
John quietly stood beside him. âAre you normally up this early?â
Alan, who had his pyjama bottoms rolled up to his knees so his feet could be dipped into the pool, gently shook his head. âCouldnât sleep.â
Many-a-time had John struggled to wake Alan up, even during one of his naps in the middle of the day. When the kid was out, he was out, so the easy confession made Johnâs instincts kick in.
Alan not being able to sleep wasnât normal.
Worried, but determined not to show it, John casually sat himself down beside Alan. His jean cuffs were rolled up to match his little brotherâs so he too could dip his feet into the pool.
âJesus, Alan! This water is freezing!â
âSun hasnât warmed it up yet.â
âThatâs why the pool has a heating system, you know?â
Alan shrugged. âSeemed like a waste to put it on if it was just my feet in there. Itâs okay, theyâve got used to the temperature now.â
Pulling himself back up to stand, John huffed. He didnât want to calculate how long that meant Alan had been out there. He walked over to the controls, set the pool heater to a sensible temperature, and then made his way back to his brother. When he sat himself back down, he crossed his legs and avoided touching the pool until the water had warmed up.
âWhat kept you awake?â
Again, Alan shrugged. âDunno.â
âNightmares?â John carefully probed. It wouldnât have been the first time Alan had suffered from night terrors.
To his initial relief, Alan shook his head. His lack of a further verbal response, however, had John still worrying.Â
Trust me, he thought to himself. Let me in, Allie.Â
He cast a glance over. Sometimes it was easy to forget how young Alan was. Their work with International Rescue had all of them pulling crazy stunts and impossible feats, and Alan made it all look so easy. Sometimes they were all guilty of forgetting that Alan was still technically just a kid. Recently graduating high school didnât change any of that over-night.
Johnâs eyes narrowed. âYouâre not worrying about college, are you?â
He had thought the idea had been ridiculous to even suggest. This was Alan he was talking to. The kid would not only get the best pick of schools but he was also incredibly capable of doing anything he set his mind to.
The way Alan froze at his question, however, seemed to suggest that John had accidentally hit the nail on the head.
âReally? You know you have nothing to worry about there.â John continued, but when his brother still didnât give him an answer, he coaxed, âAlan, come on. Talk to me. Whatâs going on in that mind of yours?â
For a moment, John wasnât sure whether Alan was going to say anything ever again. His blue eyes were fixed on a lone canary coloured float that was drifting at the far end of the pool.
âNothingâs goingâ My mind isnâtâ Iâm justâŠâ Alan sighed deeply, squeezing his eyes tightly shut. âI donât know.â
âThatâs useful.â
Johnâs dry sarcasm was unusually welcomed by his younger brother, who cracked a small smile.
âIs it about choosing the college? Or the major? Or about making friends? Because, you do know that you will excel at all of that, regardless of anything thatâs thrown in your way, right?â
Alanâs head shook. âNo. No, itâs none of that.â
âThen what is it? Surely nothing is worse than those things. Are you worried about living away from home? OrââÂ
âItâs Dad.â
John stopped mid-sentence and watched as his brother inhaled sharply.
âDad?â
Alanâs fingers picked nervously at the hem of his pyjama shirt. A thread that had come loose was in danger of being completely pulled out. âWell, not Dad himself⊠Itâs my⊠I donât know. Maybe it isâŠâ
Without checking the temperature, John dangled his legs over the edge of the pool once again so he could more easily shuffle closer to his younger brother. He was thankful the water had begun to heat up nicely so his feet didnât freeze this time around. John placed his camera down beside him and gently took Alanâs hands in his in a feeble attempt to save the pyjama top from further destruction.
âHaving Dad home is great, thatâs not what Iâm trying to say, by the way.â Alan quickly blurted out. âBut, up until now, he was always, like, a figment of my imagination. He wasnât real. There was no-one that I needed to impress, you know? I mean, other than Scott but⊠Scottyâs different. Dadâs⊠Dad.â
âAlan, you donât need to worry about impressing him.â
âYou donât get it.â
âAs the middle child of four impressive brothers, I think I do.â John attempted a soft smile, but Alan didnât seem to notice.
âTry being the youngest of four impressive brothers.â He sighed again. âThatâs not the point, though. Dad being back⊠I always dreamed of that day, no matter how impossible it seemed, and now that itâs happened and itâs real⊠I donât know. Living up to whatever it is heâs hoped for us is kind of⊠scary?â
John wrapped an arm around Alanâs shoulders, but his brother remained as stiff as a rod. Softly, he attempted to pull him closer, but Alan shook him off.
He stood up, splashing John as his feet snapped out of the water with haste. âIâm fine.â
âDonât pick up bad habits from Scott.â
âBut I am, okay? I donât need to be hugged or coddled, I just need to⊠I just need to grow up.â
The assertion had John stumped for a moment. Whilst Alan had been the youngest of them all, never had he shows signs of immaturity when it mattered. In some ways, John grieved the fact that Alan was never able to experience a normal childhood as he and his two older brothers had done. Even Gordon had received a semblance of normality before theyâd all uprooted and moved to the island. Alan had been âgrown upâ for a far longer amount of time than he should have been.Â
âDonât say that.â
âWhat, the truth?â
âAlanâŠâ
With less speed than his brother, John lifted his feet from the pool and stood himself up too.
âWhat if Iâm not good enough, Johnny?â Alanâs voice broke, his face contorted to try and keep the tears at bay. âWhat if Iâm a disappointment to Dad?â
âYouâre not going to be.â
âYou donât know that!â
âYeah, I do. You want to know why?â
Alan seemed unsure as to whether he should have allowed John to continue. He fidgeted, swaying from one leg to the other as his fingers pulled at that single thread of his shirt once again.
John didnât wait for Alan to offer up an answer. He knew that an answer wasnât going to be in the cards. âI know because of all the things Iâve seen you do, Alan. You say that youâre worried you wonât impress Dad but you impress us all every single day.â
He took a pause, allowing Alan a chance to try and negate that comment. When he didnât, John stepped towards him and placed his hands on his shoulders. Alanâs watery eyes lifted to meet Johnâs.
âYouâre already an amazing person, Alan, regardless of what Dad thinks, though I know he thinks it too.â
âHow?â
âWhen we were in the Oort Cloud, I was co-piloting with Virgil and we had Dad onboard. You were flying ahead in Three and Dad was watching you pilot that craft with such awe, Alan. He asked us who taught you to fly like that. We told him you were a natural and he looked so proud of you, Allie. You donât need to worry about proving yourself to him. Thatâs not something youâve ever needed to be worried about.â
Alan crumbled at that. He fell forward and into Johnâs arms. The outburst was no doubt at least partly due to the fact that none of them had yet taken the time that week to fully process the fact that Dad was home. If John thought too hard about it, about what Alan had just confessed and what heâd said in response, he might have risked becoming overwhelmed too. No longer did they have to come up with imaginary what-ifs when it came to their father. Anything they wondered about, they could now confirm with a simple conversation and that⊠That was going to take some getting used to again.
Alan sobbed into Johnâs shirt, but John just held him. Their conjoined shadow began to show on the rocks behind them as the sun rose higher and higher in the sky.
John pulled him in tighter. âYou donât need to be sorry.â
âBut you shouldnât⊠need⊠Iâm fine.â
His lips dared a smile. âI know, but I am and itâs alright. Itâs always alright.â
Alan broke away and roughly wiped his cheeks with the back on his hand. âYou were busy.â
âI wasnât.â
He followed Alanâs gaze as it trailed over to the abandoned camera still sitting by the poolside.
âI was just going to take some photos of the sunrise.â John clarified.
âAnd I ruined that.â
âHey, no. No, you didnât.â
âYeah, I did.â Alan hiccuped through a sniffle. âYou had to become my emotional support again.â
âYou know that Iâm always willing to be that, Alan. You know you can lean on me whenever you need to, no matter what, okay?â
âBut your photos!â
âI can still take some.âÂ
John observed the sky quickly, squinting as the warm sunlight bathed the pool in morning light, and then glanced back at Alan. âYou can join me if you like? That way we can talk more, if you wanted?â
Alan pondered the question for a moment before offering a small nod. âLet me grab some shoes.â
