In the previous post, we visited Montsalvat, the filming site of the chalet in S2E13 Murder under the Mistletoe, which is only 20 km (12 miles) northeast of Melbourne. However, if you recall, when Jack arrived, he decided to “bypass the local bloke and call the Jamieson Police”, so it appeared that the closest town from the chalet was Jamieson, which is much farther from Melbourne (193 km, or 120 miles, northeast). This finding explained why Bert and Cec didn’t just drive Jane up to the mountain to surprise them.

So, what’s there in Jamieson? Not a whole lot, apparently. According to Wikipedia, the name is believed to have been derived from George Jamieson, a shepherd who grazed sheep in the area in the 1850s. Although it was once a booming township during the Gold Rush, “Most mining operations had ceased by the beginning of the First World War, and Black Friday bushfires destroyed many mine workings in 1939.” It was not a cave-in as in this episode, but some kind of mine-related tragedy did happen here. I wonder if the writers had this significant historical event in mind when they were writing this episode.

Anyway, by the 1990s, the town regained popularity as a tourist destination, boosted by Lake Eildon reaching 100% capacity in 1996. However, the tourism industry suffered in the early 2000s following a drought which has proven to be long term. Today, the area is a popular destination for four-wheel drive enthusiasts, fishers, and amateur gold diggers. Since I have no interest in any of these activities, Jamieson will not be on my itinerary.
