Trotz und ein wenig auch wegen all seiner offensichtlichen Fehler (die sich im wesentlichen mit "Schnickschnack geht über Storytelling" zusammenfassen lassen), erreuen wir uns wie immer an Absolute Beginners, dem beherzt überproduziertem heiteren dekadenübergreifenden Ausverkauf-ideeller-Werte-und Rassenunruhen-Jazz/Pop-Musical.
The Servant (1963): fascinating queer subtext, disappointing queer relationship. Tony and Barrett eventually have an intensely intimate, almost couple-like dependency, but Barrett’s manipulation of Tony makes it very difficult for me to read as mutual desire or affection. For a brief moment I could see the film becoming something else; instead it becomes a story about domination and entrapment. Beautifully made, brilliantly acted, and James Fox is gorgeous, but definitely not the hidden mutual queer gem I hoped I’d found. 🥲
