no it's actually wild to me that max never even considered killing grace. because he says to steph that she's "just like these fuckin' losers," he almost kills steph before pete, he says nerdy prudes must pay, etc. but he not just doesn't kill grace, he's fully distracted by her. even though he views her as part of the prank when he's thanking them, she's in the circle, he doesn't view her as killing him. he's fully blindsided because he genuinely thinks she's on his team. and do with that what you will

As a quick disclaimer: I will likely never write this AU but I needed it out of my head.
Grace is on her fourth season without any proposals. Which suits her perfectly. She can’t wait until she’s officially a spinster, and she can dedicate her time to church charity efforts.
And so she can stop going to balls and seeing that awful Mr. Jagerman! Who insists on writing his name on her dance card (at least once per event, usually twice if he can) and talking to her like she’s another one of his floozies!
As his father died prior to the start of this season, Mr. Jagerman has now inherited his father’s title of Duke Jagerman. Making him the most eligible bachelor of the season.
The season starts off better than Grace could imagine, with scheming mamas throwing their daughters at Max and preventing him from bothering her. Why, no one had asked her to dance since the season began!
That is, of course until her parents invite the second son of a lowly baron to their home for the remainder of the season.
At first this sounds like a wonderful idea! After all, Gabriel Swift is studying to become a clergyman!
But when he dances with her at the ball, and lets it slip that her parents intend for the two to wed, Grace has to think fast.
After the dance she slips out to a hanging garden or a library or something secluded. But she’s not alone.
Max has also escaped the ballroom and is taking refuge. With both of them in an isolated location and voices coming down the hall, Grace makes the most desperate move of the night. She grabs him by the lapels and puts her mouth on his.
Just in time for other guests on a tour of the estate to barge in and catch them.
It’s a quick engagement and an even quicker wedding.
Max brings Grace back to his duchy immediately after the wedding, which surprises Grace. She had assumed that he would want to stay in Mayfair and…well? Do whatever it was that Rakes like him did.
She had also expected…well… her mother explained (quite literally in the carriage on the way to the wedding) what was supposed to happen on the wedding night. But instead she found herself curled up into one side of a carriage while her bridegroom stretched on the other.
When they arrive to the estate it’s uhhhh…..it’s def seen better days.
This is when we learn that Max’s dad sucked. And that he left Max with a bunch of debts to settle, and an estate he had no idea how to manage.
And Max is prideful, he doesn’t want the entire ton to know that he’s broke. So when Max had to go to society events, he’d dance with (and make his affections known for) the only debutante that would never agree to marry him. At least that’s what he thought.
So like, Grace helps him manage the estate or whatever and Max treats her like a friend instead of a wife and learns to really appreciate how smart she is and she learns to appreciate his softer side.

IM THE GRACE’S WARDROBE ANON AND OH MY GOD THE UPDATE. i have so many words but most vitally i am so excited that steph has been brought into the fray!!!!!!!!! chewing on the potential of this grace and steph’s (begrudgjng) friendship….
also as cute as they are at ths start i am ngawing my nails to see how max and grace deal with the fallout of trying to kill one another bc max’s inner voice n violence towards grace made me QUEASY…. and his later realization hes becoming his father (mostly/ partially? due to blinky’s influence)… i need to shake him in a jar.also i must say i am a grace defender first and foremost so i hope he grovels a bit (a lot).
on a lighter note loved how max gave grace pointers about gym (so cute) and breaking into watcher world!! glad they can provide positive(im using this lightly) influence to each other’s lives :3 and juxtaposed with grace really making him just a ride… love how they r given equally complex character arcs!!

Grace Wardrobe anon!!! I love you!!! Thank you!!! I have like… an end goal for Grace and Steph’s friendship??? If that makes sense? But I don’t really have the journey planned out very much. So like, in terms of how their relationship develops, I’m enjoying the ride just as much as you are. (As in like, I’m not driving either, those two are doing whatever and I’m just here to write it down lol)
I can’t wait for you to see more of Steph in the next chapter.
I also can’t wait to see how Max and Grace navigate this!! Like this is a huge turning point for their relationship and I think having them navigate it is going to be really fun!! As weird as it is to say, I’m really glad that Max made you queasy towards the end! He was supposed to! I wanted it to be a very chilling, scary scene yknow? For a second we get to be put in Grace’s shoes. Shes alone with an angry man who is much stronger than her, in a location where no one can hear her scream. It’s a very scary situation to find yourself in and I’m glad that it had the intended effect!
Im so glad you talked about the lighter aspects!! Like the hardest thing about a slow burn or a redemption arc is that it takes a lot of time. Getting these two knuckleheads to a point where they trust each other enough to sneak around in Watcher World took about 12 chapters and for the life of me, I cannot imagine how cutting any of those scenes inbetween them and now would have served the story better.
Lmao this answer got away from me too!!! I think the one of the best things to hear as a writer is that your work made someone else pace. @pipperoo ‘s jagertity fic makes me pace all the god damn time.
