Just discovered the Green Bone Saga and I can’t stop thinking about it.
Three beautiful hardcover books standing together like a quiet warning: Jade City → Jade War → Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee.
It’s mafia meets wuxia meets family dynasty, but with jade that gives you superpowers… and costs you everything. The world of Kekon feels so real it hurts. The Kaul family will ruin you (in the best way). The politics, the loyalty, the blood, the green fire — all of it hits different.
If you love:
found family that will kill for each other
morally grey characters who still make you root for them
beautiful, brutal world-building
that specific ache of watching a dynasty rise and fall
…then this trilogy is waiting for you.
I’m still not over it.
The other thing that’s striking about Hilo in Jade War is how little we get to see him actually grieve Kehn? Tar’s grief for Kehn functions as a driving force for a decent portion of the rest of the series but we never get to see Hilo grappling with Kehn’s death. We know that he must have grieved him, but we never actually get to see it.
The climax of Jade War changes something fundamental about the way Hilo perpetrates violence. He’s perfectly capable and willing to commit violence after that point, but he’s less likely to go all-in for violent retribution with no thought for the consequences than he previously was. The Kaul Hilo we met in Jade City would never have turned down Fuyin’s offer a clean blade the way he does at the beginning of Jade Legacy. In Jade City nothing would have stopped Hilo from attacking the Mountain after Lan dies, Shae just manages to come up with a tactically sound plan to direct his vengeance (remember, Hilo’s original plan for how to respond to Lan’s death was a suicide mission). However, the Kaul Hilo we’ve got by the beginning of Jade Legacy understands that sometimes the cost of violence can be too high to pay. This bit of character development is the same reason why Shae, Anden and Juen are able to talk Hilo out of attacking the Mountain when Ru dies and probably why he bargains with Ayt Mada when Shae and Wen are captured in Shotar.
I’m not saying that Hilo “becomes a good person” or whatever because that’s not supported by canon (and honestly I lowkey think the series would have been weaker if he had), but he is more likely to consider and value preserving the lives and health of the people he loves (and himself) over bloody vengeance after Jade War and I think that’s interesting.
(It’s also worth noting that I’ve always attributed this character shift to the climax of Jade War, but the whole reason Wen is even directly involved in the Zapunyo assassination is because things start going wrong while Hilo is in the hospital with Ru and Hilo loses his nerve and tries to call the whole thing off, which is behavior we’d never seen from him before at that point. That implies the shift is at least partially driven by both Ru’s close call and probably by KEHN’s death and then just got hammered home by what happens to Wen and Anden, which is interesting. Also the logic Hilo uses to justify refusing Fuyin’s clean blade is fundamentally about LAN’s death.)

Reading Jade Legacy, and I’m so TIRED of Bero’s chapters, I don’t CARE about this little shit, he’s boring and I just don’t want to read about his shitty life. I get why the author chose to write his chapters but I literally audibly groan anytime I have to read one
I finished the Green Bone Saga last night. I knew from the start it would become one of my favorite series ever. Oh my god.
What a perfect ending. I feel like I lived a lifetime in Janloon.
I have plenty of thoughts about it. However, right now I just want to show off the jade-inspired dice set I got last year lol.
Hope I can use them in the RPG.
