I finally got round to watching Jacques Tati’s Playtime the other night, a movie that has been on my must-watch list for far too long. What an extraordinary masterpiece it is. Unlike any film I’ve seen before – a perplexing mix of satire, absurdism, slapstick, social commentary and dystopian futurology with barely a nod to anything resembling a conventional narrative structure. The film has a fascinating backstory – well documented online – including the construction of vast and ruinously expensive sets (Tativille) that effectively made Tati bankrupt. Although critically lauded, Playtime was just too strange to become a mainstream box-office hit. It did, however, have a big influence on later film-makers such as Wes Anderson, David Lynch and (very obviously) Swedish director Roy Andersson. The Pythons were also keen Tati fans. I would love to see this film again on the big screen sometime. There must be so much detail in the packed frames that is simply lost when watching on a TV. If you have a taste for the offbeat and surreal and have never seen it before, do seek it out. It’s a joy. . #jacquestati #playtime #monsieurhulot #pendrawing #sketch #pensketch #sketchbook #artistsoninstagram (at Brighton) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnzc2ReoavT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
