News At Six 1986 Meets Sam Reid! ❤️🌟🤴🏼📺

One of the many incredible people we met on our set day was Sam Reid - Mr Dale Jennings himself! ❤️🤴🏼

As he is the male lead of The Newsreader, I must admit that some nerves bubbled inside when I first stepped into the newsroom and he waved my way down the hallway. In full costume as Dale, it was a very heady experience; like he had leapt out of the telly. The second he was finished talking to the camera crew, he came into Helen’s old office (where Michael Lucas and Michelle Lim Davidson has taken us) and shook hands with Mum and I, warmly welcoming us into the space. My nerves disappeared from there on, he was just lovely!

In our first exploration of the newsroom, Sam helped Michael and Michelle show us around. It was just us, Emma Freeman and a few camera people; a surreal yet beautifully close moment. He has such a huge fan base, so I knew how truly lucky I was to have this individual moment with him. Sam is a brilliant holder of knowledge, and was excited to explain the process of how the old computer monitors worked, through iPads being placed inside the screen. He also searched his brain for any history he could remember of the building itself, and the thrill of having his expertise called upon lit up in his eyes.

When we were filming our scene (Cheryl’s hens night, S03E05), he checked on how we were going, and even got a special job! You all might have seen Emma Freeman post a video of the cast and crew doing The Nutbush in the newsroom last year. With so much delight, I can say that this was on my set day! Mum and I are in the video in the back row! As for Sam, he was perched on a chair, holding Emma’s phone to record the dance. Dale’s actor got to be a cameraman!

I feel so privileged to have met Sam twice now; first on set, the second at the Season Three ACMI premiere. He played a significant role in making both of these days so special and memorable. I even share a unit still with him too; funnily enough, mirroring his actions in the background! Thank you to Sam for being such a wonderful and intelligent human! I’m so grateful for him for the magic he helped create that day! 🌟

Noelene was in the middle of cooking an early Christmas lunch with her sister-in-law Kerrie when Jean rang.

Kay Walters had been trying to get a hold of Helen and Noelene, and once Noelene got Kay’s number, she investigated this herself, apologising to Kerrie, who took over the stove.

“The interview has to be today,” Kay insisted.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, but that can’t happen right now. We’ve scheduled you in for Monday,” Noelene reminded Kay.

“It’s today, or I go to another network.” Kay stood her ground.

Noelene realised the urgency of this, and was dismayed when her call to Helen and Dale went to their answering machine. Ringing Dennis, this wasn’t much help either, and the Rickards were already tucking into the lunch without her.

“The way Kay just sounded, if we don’t do the interview right now, we’ll lose her.” She conveyed to Dennis, but he seemed more interest into sliding into the holidays, which Noelene wished she could do too. Not before one last phone call.

“Must be important,” Kerrie noted from the table, and yes, it was.

“I’m sorry, but we can only do Monday,” Noelene shared with Kay over the phone.

“I can’t wait that long,” Kay answered. “If you hang up, News At Six has lost the story.”

Noelene sighed, defeatedly. “It’s okay. I understand. If you change your mind, the offer still stands.”

She at last sat down with the Rickards. It wasn’t usually like this on days off, she reassured Glen and Kerrie, although Rob reminded her that she used her days off to watch all the tapings and read all the newspapers she hadn’t gotten around to during the week.

Kay was grateful to see Helen and Noelene.

It had been hard to gather them today for the interview at such notice, but she now sat on the lounge of a hotel room that would be her space until Monday.

“So umm, Kay, I know that you’re familiar with the media, but my questions are gonna be pretty frank.” Helen disclosed. “I’m gonna ask you about your drug use and about your treatment, and I’m gonna talk about your family history and family dynamic.”

Kay fished out photos of simpler times from childhood, giving permission for these to go to air.

“I’m not the only person you’re speaking with?” Kay double checked.

“No, the final story will include a range of perspectives on the heroin crisis,” Noelene reassured her, and Helen got her some cash to get her through the weekend.

“So how much were you spending?” Helen asked once the cameras began rolling.

“Hundreds of dollars a day,” Kay admitted.

“What makes it so addictive?” Helen queried.

“It’s like… your problems don’t exist. But heroin wasn’t some kind of escape for me. It was a life raft.” Kay contextualised.

Helen glanced down momentarily. “You know, some people would find it pretty hard to understand why someone with your kind of life advantages would need that kind of life raft.”

It was true that Kay had an advantageous upbringing. She rode horses, lived in a big home, and went overseas as a child.

“But it was drilled into me that what we had was only because my father was famous and well-respected, and if I did anything to compromise that… I was a disappointment and I was shamed.”

Kay didn’t think she was what her parents had imagined for their life, so she tried to be a different version of herself; their model daughter. The air was heavy in the room, for everyone.

“Do you love your parents?” Helen questioned.

Tears welled in Kay’s eyes.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Do you think your parents love you, Kay?” Helen posed.
