Summary:

This teaser still is so funny to me. Like, what's going on here?

Why is Trottie staring at right at the camera? It's made even more obvious by the fact she is the only thing in the shot facing pointed at the camera.

What is with Jack's suit? That suit immediately made me think of those white-and-black striped prison uniforms, which isn't exactly great considering his past. Either that or he's with the mafia (though the stripes are maybe a little wide for that).

Why is Colonel Winters' hand on Trottie's back? I guess maybe he's actually holding the car door, but Trottie is in the way.

Something is going on between Colonel Winters and Jack and Trottie is just. In the middle. She might be pushing Jack into the taxi so they can get away from Winters (is he harassing them? Asking the wrong sorts of questions?) or she's seeing Jack off. Who knows.

All in all, out of context it looks like some sort of picture where mom and dad are sending their kid off to college or his first job.

Trottie and her first husband were married September 20th 1921.

The dates are very close and he thought the picture of Felix was her husband, which meant that it was his dad.

But....why did he think that Trottie was his mother, really? Getting married five months and one week after the out of wedlock baby was born and put in an orphanage makes no sense?

If Trottie was his mother and she had been married to his father, why would they have gotten married nearly half a year after he was born and in the orphanage?

I could see him assuming that they were his parents if their marriage had been before he was born. Jack thought (correctly) his father was dead, so I could see a scenario where he was born after Trottie's marriage and he assumed that she was widowed, couldn't handle having a baby all alone, and gave him up.

Of course, I guess we don't know precisely when Jack ended up in the orphanage (that I remember? Felix clearly knew that Jack was in the orphanage, Jack would have been fifteen when he gave Book the book, and Jack didn't know his parents. Bear with me, I'm reading the booking and it's so hard to watch/rewatch Bookish in America....), but the dates don't quite support his theory, in my opinion.

It's so odd doing it this way, because while the book does offer more information on characters, it also removes some of the scenes from the show and I noticed that a few of Trottie, Jack, and Bliss's lines are not in the book itself and skipped over entirely. Some of Book's lines, mostly regarding other characters, are also not there.

And it sticks out more than if the show had skipped bits of the book, at least to me.

Trottie and Book's conversation where he sends Trottie to go find out about the coin in the plague pit isn't there.

Jack finding Trottie's marriage certificate and the picture of Felix? Not there either, revisited very briefly later down the line and Dog watches Jack snoop, Trottie doesn't catch him. (Trottie also never asked Jack to go upstairs, he just disappeared for pages and came back with a purse for no prior mentioned reasons).

It's just so weird to me doing it this way and I never have this problem when I've read a book first! 😂

There's definitely more, but I haven't had the time to sit down and read it cover to cover, just skim through.
