B-day commission for @renrenardine (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) I am happy with how it turned out! I took a little risk with pose and perspective, and it paid off I think- or I hope! I might have an unhealthy obsession... with Jamie Campbell Bower, so I did buy this book off of good old thriftbooks.com. I thought the synopsis was interesting as well. I’ve read about 6 chapters so far and here’s what I think.

Alright. Well. Um. Okay. The writing is alright? No. It’s bad, I’m sorry. I hate to say this, but there are times when it is confusing, hard to read, and just doesn’t make sense. I had to go back and reread the same page three times and I was only on the first chapter. 

BUT THERE’S STILL HOPE. I decided to trudge on, you know what I found? Jace Wayland. He’s the reason I’m still reading. I usual take caution with fantasy books because of how confusing they can get, but there are parts of this story that are actually pretty cool. Though, the descriptions aren’t always well-written.

And for the dialogue. My gosh. I have never cringed harder at words on a page. I understand that the author is trying to give insight as to how this whole Shadowhunters thing goes down, but no one talks to each other like that. 

“He means other demons... You know what demons are, don’t you?” 

Shoot me now, I’m sorry, but what? This boy was literally talking to a demon that he knew was a demon. It’s almost as if our Shadowhunters know that Clary is in the storage closet with them. This happens over and over again in the dialogue. Dialogue that would not happen in real life because why are you repeating things that everyone in the conversation already knows? 

And apparently this storage room/closet is a really big room and not a... closet. That was the part I had to go back and read a million times because I could not wrap my head around the fact that they somehow couldn’t see her. Or hear her walk in? Lack of description. She seems like the clumsy type.

ON TO CLARY. Goodness gracious. I—well—how do I even start this. Interestingly enough, I thought our girl was better than your typical, basic y/n you can find in almost every Wattpad story, but no. She’s your typical, basic y/n. She’s “ugly” because she’s short with a face full of freckles. Am I supposed to feel sorry for you? Also, the way she treats her mom is so... white? Yes, white. Very white. I understand the argument between the two of them, but blowing off her calls? Who do you think you are at fifteen?

Actually, a lot about this book is white. I could tell the author was white. When I read “curvy black girl” and “maple-syrup skin” I was about ready to throw this book out the window. Very ready. Still ready. 

I’m really liking Simon right now. Dude never fails to make me laugh. I was cracking up when what’s-his-name didn’t expect Simon barge through the doors and yelled, “Jesus!” to which Simon says, “Actually, it’s just me. Although, I’ve been told the resemblance is startling.” 

But when he asked her how she wanted her coffee and Clary said, “Black. Like my soul.” I was about ready to throw up.

It’s obvious, not to mention cliché, that he’s the jealous best friend who secretly has a crush on Y/n—I mean Clary—but Clary can’t see that cause she could never expect anyone to see her in a romantic way because she’s so plain and different and boring. Not exactly looking forward to Simon’s reaction after Clary and Jace get together.

Oh God. Clary and Jace get together. And then they... and then... you know what, I’m gonna pretend I don’t already know that part.

Do I like Clary so far? I can’t say I do. And if Jace would stop lecturing people every FIVE FREAKING SECONDS I would really like him too. I’m a sucker for a good enemies-to-lovers trope, so if I trudge on, I might end up liking it? Slim chance. I’ll read it because I’m imagining Jace as JCB though. 

Also, the quotes at the beginning are so unnecessary to me. This book is targeted towards young teens who have no idea what any of that even means. Adds to the pretentiousness of the book. There is a lot of that here.

After Elena tried to give herself to Klaus in exchange for the safety of her friends and family, she had received a huge lecture on how irresponsible it was of her. Stefan was stuck in the tomb with Katherine and that vampire that was supposed to be dead was apparently very much alive.

Tessa had decided to sleep in and stay away from all the supernatural drama for one day. ONE DAY. And her best friend tried to kill herself, her other best friend got stuck with her psycho friend and now her favorite vampire best friend was whining about how annoying his life had become to her.

"What Elena did was stupid," Tessa said, "But it wasn't wrong. I would have done the same thing."

"You would have sacrificed yourself?" Damon questioned furrowing his eyebrows as he looked at her with a bit of hurt.

"If it means keeping the people I care about safe, then yes. I don't think I could live with myself if anything happened to you. Any of you."

Damon sped in front of her, their faces barely touching as he looked into her eyes. Lust and desire flashed in his eyes as he slightly leaned in. It was as if a button was clicked in his brain and he back away, speeding away leaving a very confused Tessa behind.

"You should really lock your door." Damon joked as he came into the room with a smile on his face, Elena had a pour on her face while Tessa tried to get her to eat something.

"Come on, pouty. At least give me 2 points for ingenuity."

"Do you think this is funny?"

"Yes, Elena I find hilarity in the lengths that I have to go to repeatedly save your life.

"What did Stefan say about this?"

"He had a good laugh."

"And what did he say about Elijah still being alive?" Damon lifted Tessa's feet up and rest them on his lap. He then proceeded to take her sandwich out of her hands and takes a giant bite.

"Hey!"

"Sharing is caring."

"Not when it comes to my food," she complained and he responds by kissing her cheek.

"Yeah, and that I didn't tell him about Elijah."

"Why not?" Tessa asked him and he pursed his lips.

"Well, A he can't do anything about it, and B what I just said."

"Wow, such a profound argument."

"Where is Bonnie?" Damon asked as Jeremy came into the room.

"I thought she was meeting you," Jeremy answered.

"No, she's on moonstone duty and I'm on Elena patrol."

"And who's on Tyler Lockwood and the full moon?" Elena widened her eyes realizing what the night was.

"Vampire Barbie asked me if she could handle it and I said why not figured if she screwed up, he'd bite her, and then I'll be rid of two of my problems."

"Don't be a dick." Tessa scolded him as she smacked his head.  

"Hold on a second. Tonight's the full moon." Elena asked them.

"Yep, but you're too absorbed with all your suicidal tendencies to notice." Damon took a call, "Hey, change of plans." Damon hung up and looked at Jeremy and Tessa.

"You babysit tonight." He orders them and Tessa raised her brow at him.

"Hey, you know, you should get out. Enjoy the sun. Oh, wait you can't." Elena chucked a pillow at Damon and missed. Jeremy and Tessa laughed leading to her shoving him to the floor and glaring at Tessa.

Elena had warmed up to being trapped in the house. Even watching a movie in her room with Tessa and eating a giant bowl of popcorn. Knowing they needed some more food, they head downstairs to see what they had in the kitchen.

They walked down the stairs to see Jenna taking boxes out of the closest.

"What are you doing?" Tessa asks her.

"Oh, perfect timing." She thrusts a box in Elena's arms and then another in Tessa's.

"What is this stuff?' Elena asked.

"Your mom's files from the historical society. I got roped into helping Mrs. Lockwood. And by roped, I mean very excited to participate." She slammed the closet door and both their jaws dropped to see the suit-wearing original in Elena's house, staring right back at them with a small smirk.

"Hey, I'm Elijah." Tessa had never felt my heart beat faster than it was then. Jenna had let in a vampire who had tried to kidnap Elena, but apparently not to give her to Klaus which was extremely confusing, and now there was nothing they could do to get him out.

"Elijah's in town doing research on Mystic Falls," Jenna informs them like it was no big deal. If only she knew what Elijah was.

"It's a pleasure." Elijah holds out his hand for Elena and Tessa to shake. Elena hesitantly shook his and when Tessa went go to shake it he bent down and placed a kiss on it making her shiver in fear.

"So, you know, you're welcome to stay here and rummage through this stuff. Or Elena, Tessa, and I could help you load it into your car."

"Yeah, or I can get someone to pick it up tomorrow."

"Also a good plan."

"Thank you so much for inviting me into your home, Jenna." Elijah went to follow Jenna to the front door but stopped. "Oh, Tessa and Elena I hope to see you two again sometime soon."

Once the door was shut, the two girls raced upstairs to alert Jeremy and banged on his door when they realized it was locked.

Right when they heard it quick, Elijah came next to them and signaled them to be quiet.

"What?" Jeremy all but snapped at his sister before glancing at Tessa with a smile.

"Aunt Jenna was asking if you could help her with the boxes."

"Okay," the younger Gilbert said before he walked off.

"That was a smart choice," Elijah said before he asked to speak to us alone.

"Oh, forgive the intrusion. I mean your family no harm," Elijah started.

"That is why you tricked your way in her house?" Tessa said crossing her arms and glaring at the original.

He just shook his head amused at her bravery.

"Why'd you kill those vampires when they tried to take me?" Elena asked. Elijah opened his mouth to answer only to be cut off by a furious Tessa.

"You mean when you tried to give yourself over to them because you are a stupid suicidal doppelganger?" She said making Elena glare at her.

"I didn't want you to be taken. Klaus is the most feared and hated of the originals. Those that fear him are desperate for his approval. Word gets out the doppelganger exists, there will be vampires eager to take you to him and I can't have that."

"Isn't that exactly what you're trying to do?" Elena asked.

"Let's say my goal is not to break the curse."

"Then what is your goal?"

"Klaus' obsessions have made him paranoid. He's a recluse. He trusts only those in his circle," Elijah explained.

"Like you?" Tessa asked.

"Not anymore."

"You don't know where he is, do you?" Elena asked.

Tessa was already tired of their conversation. Her head was spinning, and her body was begging for a change. They were sitting in that room for ten minutes and she was tired. Her focus went from Elijah to the tiles on the floor and the frames on the table.

This always happened. And it annoyed Tessa more than anything. She couldn't stay in one place. Do one thing without being distracted; without this need to move away, do something else.

Tessa's eyes fluttered open as she took in her surrounding. Her best friend, Elena Gilbert was sitting on the couch with her arms crossed as she glared daggers at two people she did not know.

The place reminded her of the basement, it was dark and dusty. Tessa could feel her heart pounding as the memories of her time came back to her.

There was a girl with a pixie cut and a man that was looking at the doppelganger like she was a piece of meat. "Look who's awake," the man said as he noticed Tessa. "Why can't I eat her, the doppelicious is the one that needs to stay alive, right?"

"Control Trevor," Pixie cut rolled her eyes.

Their heads snapped to the door of the room as fear clouded Trevor's eyes.

"He's here. Let's just leave them and run. He'll kill us, Rose."

Elena went to Tessa and grabbed her hand. She was terrified while Tessa just stood there confused and terrified.

She was scared they had found her. She was scared all of it would happen again. She wasn't strong enough to handle it again.

In a minute, Rose came with an attractive man in a suit. He quickly sped to Elena, standing extremely close to her.

As terrified as she was, Tessa would rather have her get hurt than her best friend. She pushed her best friend back and came between them to ensure the doppelganger's safety.

Elijah usually would have killed anyone who dared to step in his way, but he was impressed by the human's bravery and her need to protect those she cared about.

"Hello there," he said slightly smiling at the girl. "What's your name?" he asked.

"I'm Tessa White, who the hell are you?" She replied, crossing her arms.

"I'm Elijah. It's lovely to meet you, Miss White. I give you my word I will not hurt your friend there, but I need to check something." He said ushering her to the side. For some reason Tessa believed him, she could see honesty in his eyes.

Elijah got close to Elena and breathed her scent. Elena felt a small sense of triumph being the center of attention again. She was a popular girl, who now had two vampires fighting for her. She was a good person, but she reveled in the attention she got from people and always craved more.

"Human, that's impossible." he breathed out.

"Well, actually it isn't. Kat had a baby before she left Bulgaria. Her asshole of a father took the baby girl and gave her away." Tessa stated.

Katherine had trusted the young girl very quickly, which was shocking even to her. Tessa had that aura around her, it made you want to be with her, just to be close to her and trust her and tell her everything.

"Kat? Since when are you friends with Katherine?" Elena demanded.

"She's not a completely bad person, Elena. She had her reasons."

"She threatened me, Tessa," Elena said crossing her arms and glaring at her best friend.

"You're alive aren't you?" Tessa stated with raised eyebrows.

"You know Katarina?" Elijah asked looking at her.

"Yeah, my best friend is dating both the Salvatore brothers. Of course, I know Katherine." She said chuckling when she saw Elena glare at her.

"We have a long journey ahead of us. We should get going." Elijah said as he looked at Tessa with amusement.

"Please don't let him take me." Elena cried.

"One last piece of business. Then we're done." He said walking towards Trevor.

"I've waited so long for this, Elijah, I am truly sorry," Trevor told him.

"Oh no, your apology is not necessary," Elijah said.

"Yes, yes it is. You trusted me with Katerina and I failed you." So that is what he did. There is no way this Elijah dude is letting him go alive. Tessa thought.

"Oh yes, you are the guilty one, and Rose aided you because she was loyal to you. That I honor, where was your loyalty?" Oh, he definitely dead.

"I beg your forgiveness."

"Elena, look away," Tessa said. Elijah glanced at her to see her hiding Elena's face in her shoulders.

"So granted." He said as he hit his head off. Tessa looked away while Elena let out a huge scream, sobbing into her shoulders.

He came towards the two brunettes, Tessa walked back dragging her best friend with her, a fearful expression on her face.

"No, what about the moonstone?" Elena cried out.

"Elena shut up." Tessa hissed.

"What do you know about the moonstone?" he asked her, well more like demanded.

"I know you need it, and I know where it is."

"Yes"

"I can help you get it."

"Elena stop." she hissed again.

"Tell me where it is," Elijah ordered.

"It doesn't work that way." Tessa interrupted. She could see that Elena was shaking and needed to step in before she slips their leverage out of fear.

"Are you negotiating with me, little one?" He asked looking at her with amusement and a bit of adoration. He couldn't help the fluttering feeling in his heart, Tessa had the power to melt the coldest of hearts.

"Well, duh. You really didn't just expect us to spill up our only leverage, did you?" She said looking at him like he was an idiot.

He looked at her amusingly before turning to Elena and trying to compel her.

"What is this vervain doing around your neck?" he said ripping off the necklace and compelling her. "Tell me where the moonstone is."

"In the tomb underneath the church ruins." She said in a monotone voice.

"What is it doing there?" Tessa's heart started pounding. Katherine had told her something about running from a very old vampire and it might be this one. What if he gets her and hurts her.

"It doesn't matter what it is doing there. It's there, you know it. Can we just leave now, this house makes me want to kill myself," she said bringing his attention to her breaking Elena's trance.

"It's with Katherine," Elena said with a small smirk. She knew that if Tessa was protecting Katherine, it meant that Elijah knowing her location would get her competitor rid for good.

"Elena!" Tessa yelled as Elena just gave her an innocent look.

"What's that?" He asked as they heard a sound outside.

"I don't know. There's no one in the house, I promise." Rose said when Elijah looked at her accusingly.

He gripped Elena's arm roughly to which she winced, as he gently grabbed Tessa's and walked outside.

"Up here," came a voice with a whoosh sound. "Down here," came another voice.

Tessa was quickly sped upstairs behind a wall with Damon's hand on her mouth and his finger up to tell her to be quiet.

"You okay, sunshine?" he asked concerned as he searched her for injuries. Damon always called her sunshine, he said she would light up the room every time she entered and all the problems would vanish away with just her smile.

Tessa nodded as she sent him a small smile.

"I'll come with you, just let my friends go. They're just trying to help." Elena said as she ran to the stairs.

Elijah sped to the doppelganger as she pulled the pin of the vervain grenade in her hand throwing it on his face.

After a lot of commotion, the original was dead. Tessa ran downstairs to see the man pale and veiny with a stake in his heart.

Elena ran down to Stefan as Tessa ran to Damon and hugged him. He held her tight as he soothed her hair, neither of them noticed the slightly jealous look in Stefan's eyes as he watched the young brunette hugging his brother.
