On February 23, 1945, six United States Marines raised the second U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The moment was forever captured in time by Associated Press photographer, Joe Rosenthal.
Three of the six Marines in the photographβSergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousleyβwere killed in action during the battle. The other three Marines in the photograph were Private First Class Ira Hayes, Private First Class Harold Schultz, and Private First Class Harold Keller.
