People around the world are discovering the existence of a peculiar Italian tradition during Carnival. In this city of the North, called Ivrea, every year, for three days during the Carnival period, takes place the battle of the oranges where people literally throw oranges at each other 😂

It's a tradition from the XIX century, that probably was a sort of medieval re-enactment of a popular revolt against tyranny at that time. Today it's considered as part of the Carnival celebrations, with teams playing against each other and random people taking part in the battle. The goal is to avoid getting injured (yes, usually dozens of people get injured lmao), to have fun and, of course if you're part of one of the teams, TO WIN THE BATTLE.

But isn't this a big waste of food? I know you guys see it as that, many Italians also believe this, but actually those oranges are rotten or non edible in general. People buy them directly from farmers so they don't have to throw them away and can have some money back and once the battle is done, they collect the oranges on the ground and use them to make compost and fertilize the soil. As you can see there's NO waste involved.

And then we arrive to the point. AMERICANS (the ones from the USA, not the continent) DISCOVERED THIS TRADITION and yes, the discussion went in the direction you're imagining 😐

Con l’inizio del 2026 Ivrea, martedì 6 gennaio, darà il via all’edizione 2026 dello Storico Carnevale di Ivrea, uno degli appuntamenti più sentiti del Piemonte. Alle 8.30, piazza di Città sarà il primo teatro della giornata dove si ritroveranno i Pifferi e Tamburi, pronti a dare voce alla città e alle 9,  la loro uscita solenne avrà inizio alla marcia di apertura del Carnevale.
