Henry’s lungs burn. He realizes he’s been holding his breath. Slowly, he exhales, and watches his breath hit Hans’s face and hair. Only then does he realize how closely they’re standing, and he takes half a step away, leaning his shoulder against the wall.

“This is an interesting observation from someone who almost cried outside of the tavern on the way to Trosky because he wanted a fuck so bad,” Henry says, and even this attempt at humor and deflection seems to fall flat between them, a plain attempt to cover over what Hans has just revealed, plain to them both.

Hans shrugs. “Alright, maybe I do it too, then.”

Henry swallows. His throat dry. He sees Hans’s eyes dart down to see this movement, then back up to his face.

“So what does that mean?” Henry asks, a touch of panic descending, light and bubbly, like the top part of a beer, like the touch of a girl’s fingers on him while he’s still soft. “Should we take vows of chastity?”

“I think I’d rather die,” Hans replies.

A shiver of laughter passes between them.
