Amazing job by safety diver @taylork.sea who was able to cut this fishing line off a shark today! Although it’s encouraging to see fishermen cutting their lines to free hooked sharks as the hooks will eventually rust out, the trailing fishing line (especially at this length) can potentially entangle sharks like one of our favorites #SharkIDMsAloha or get snagged on the sea floor/passing objects which can be lethal so we always try our best to trim lines on passing sharks or cut them free entirely if possible. Wise words from @mermaid_kayleigh regarding Australia’s senseless recent decision to reinstate a shark cull #STOPTHECULL #ItsTheirOcean #Repost @mermaid_kayleigh ・・・ Four tiger sharks have been killed recently in response to shark attacks in the Whitsundays. Guess what... they have no idea if these tigers are responsible for any of the attacks. Likely, they are not the same sharks as this species is known to move around quite far quite fast. In the past culling sharks has been proven ineffective as the sharks responsible for bites move on and new sharks come in to these areas. While it is incredibly sad and terrifying for the people involved, killing sharks when they injure humans is not the answer. These animals aren’t purposely targeting humans as a food source. The opposite is actually true. When they realize the human isn’t the food source they sought after, they typically leave. Sharks are just doing their jobs in the food web. We need predators to keep the trophic levels below them healthy and functioning. Australia, you’re destroying your natural resources out of fear. Shark nets and drum lines are killing your sharks and countless more marine life indiscriminately. You could be profiting off your live, healthy sharks by running eco-tours, benefitting the local economy and educating the public. Check out the last two thoughtful posts by @thelifeofrileynz on how that money should be spent, researching and learning more about sharks in this area to prevent adverse human interactions. This is exactly why we need more shark conservationists out there, standing together, on the same team (instead of wasting time bashing one another purely from an ego standpoint). More people loving sharks, swimming with sharks, and speaking up for them. This is why I’ll never stop taking anyone I’m able to diving with sharks @oneoceandiving. As a surfer there is always that fear in the back of my mind of a shark attack. But now I see how that fear of mine isn’t exactly grounded in reality. Of course, there is always a risk of a shark attack when paddling out, but that risk is incredibly small compared to any other surf related injury. While swimming with these graceful creatures I was given an overall sense of peace. It wasn’t a scary experience at all and I would recommend it all oceangoers and adventure seekers alike! Afraid of ending up as shark dinner? Don’t be! It’s more likely for sharks to end up as human dinner! Shark fin soup is an expensive delicacy that is eaten in China as well as some Chinese restaurants in America. It can cost anywhere from $300 to $2,000, and all for a bowl of soup! Eating sharks has no nutritional value, and in fact it has been found that humans are at risk of acquiring the neurotoxin BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). This is a compound normally produced by cyanobacteria, and apex predators (like sharks) tend to have high concentrations of this because they eat so much including other predators with high concentrations of BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). It is estimated that 1.4 million tons, or around 100 million individual sharks are killed per year for shark finning (Worm et al. 2013). The practice itself is extremely wasteful and inhumane: illegal fisheries have been found to use sea lion flesh to bait the sharks, and once caught the fins are cut and the shark is discarded to either bleed out or suffocate (Schiller et al. 2015). Plastic pollution in our ocean is a growing problem. 1.15 to 2.41 million metric tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year (The Ocean Cleanup). The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) is a region located between Hawaiʻi and California. It consists of a massive collection of plastic and trash floating in the ocean that equates to more than 600,000 square miles, equivalent to twice the size of Texas (Lebreton, Slat, Ferrari, Sainte-Rose, Aitken, Marthouse, Hajibane, Cunsolo, Shwarz, Levivier, Noble, Debeljak, Maral, Schoeneich-Argent, Brambini, Reissner). When plastic enters a marine environment, various actions may occur that will cause the plastic to be transported to oceanic gyres, such as GPGP (Eriksen, Thiel, Lebreton). Evidence has been found that the GPGP is accumulating quickly than previously predicted, and ocean plastic pollution in GPGP is increasing at an exceptionally faster rate (Lebreton, Slat, Ferrari, Sainte-Rose, Aitken, Marthouse, Hajibane, Cunsolo, Shwarz, Levivier, Noble, Debeljak, Maral, Schoeneich-Argent, Brambini, Reissner). The high concentration of plastics arriving in the region of GPGP is said to be due to the substantial ocean plastic sources in Asia and intensified fishing activity in the pacific ocean (Jambeck, Lebreton). Conservationists hope that systematically monitoring the GPGP due to the already accumulated good dataset will allow for a better understanding of long-term trends in oceanic plastic pollution (Lebreton, Slat, Ferrari, Sainte-Rose, Aitken, Marthouse, Hajibane, Cunsolo, Shwarz, Levivier, Noble, Debeljak, Maral, Schoeneich-Argent, Brambini, Reissner). With a better understanding of long-term trends in plastic pollution, conservationists and scientists are able to work more efficiently toward finding a solution to this pressing issue. While most sharks tend to prefer warm water, the Salmon Shark (Lamna ditropis) likes things a little cooler. Making its home in the subarctic water of the North Pacific, the Salmon Shark lives in temperatures from near freezing up to 24 degrees Celsius (Weng et al. 2005). To survive the brutal cold, this species utilizes endothermy (ADFG 2005). Endothermy means that an organism maintains a constant body temperature higher than its environment. Salmon Sharks can also escape the cold by pursuing their migratory food sources; They eat salmon, walleye, and many other marine organisms (UFL). An interesting point on the Salmon shark is that it makes up the same family as Great White and Makos (ADFG 2005). Sharks are a misunderstood species which face many hardships and unimaginable threats such as finning, culling and bycatch. But what is less known, the species face a looming threat of climate change. Not only does the land suffer consequences of climate change, the ocean also experiences magnifying effects. The ocean is absorbing approximately 30% of the carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. As a result, the ocean is becoming more acidic (NOAA). This extraneous increase in acidity affects nearly all the marine life from corals to sharks. “The most ancient sharks date back to 450 million years ago, during a period when the oceans were much warmer and much more acidic.” (Kanski, 2015). Sharks today are not familiar with such environments and are subsequently forced to adapt to these foreign conditions, affecting their physiology and threatening their survival due to their slow rate of evolution. This is a serious matter that needs to be heard and understood. Marine life including sharks have silently suffered from the effects of man and the way we are shaping the future of our oceans.
