hi, ito!
I have yet to watch csm, but I was very curious about your song choice for your animatic "robot" :D it felt like a very specific decision and I was wondering if the song itself meant something to you. I'd love to hear about it if you are comfortable!
also, your animatic is gorgeous! even as someone who has no idea what's going on, it feels like it's radiating an emotion I can't place but definitely feel. I showed it to my brother who has watched csm and it really got to him, haha
hope you're surviving in this horrible heat TvT have a lovely week!
so glad someone opened this pandora box for me;
So the song is by a greek alt rock band called Xylina Spathia (The Wooden Swords) and they were one of (if not the) the most influential bands in Greece during the 90s-- super ahead of their time (for our country, that adopts every trend approximately 20 years after it's been popularized in the West), and super SUPER anti-government and anti-capitalist.
"Robot" in particular is essentially about a guy who gets into it with a clanker (common man vs the capitalist state). It starts by saying "this guy" (the bot) is looking at him as though it's a camera recording everything he (the man) does and how it must not have a heart but a bunch of tangled up wires, stretching into infinity. My favourite lyric is toward the end and it translates to "merchants of all, invisible and visible",, basically a critique of how under capitalism everything has a price, including you, and the state is doing the selling and buying.
It's my favorite song of theirs, mainly sonically, and I've thought about how much it fits with Chainsaw Man's themes ever since Christmas, and have been circling this idea around in my head. The thing about not having a heart, the suits, the evil corporations, being constantly watched, having your dreams stolen and commodified-- it's all very Denji. Also the song was released in 1997, which is the exact year Chainsaw Man takes place.
The animatic is basically like a reel of Denji's traumas from part 1 playing over in his head, getting tangled up and interconnected like a broken tape, under the general idea of Makima watching his every move.
On a more personal level, my brother used to put Xylina Spathia songs to me from his iPod when I was a kid and we would bang our heads together. They have a particular lyric in their most popular song that says "Time will pass// the wheel will turn// Helen of Troy will now be a hag" and I used to think it was hilarious since I was just learning about the Illiad at school .
Later on, when I first started dating my partner,, the first song he ever sent to me that reminded him of me, was also a Xylina Spathia song, and on our first road trip together we listened to almost their entire discography front to back in the car
Anyways, they're lovely. I wish they still played as a band.
And I'm trying my best with the heat, thank you. I hope it's cooler wherever you are :D
