The Volpi Muffaletta is a classic Italian-American sandwich featuring layers of savory meats, cheese, and a flavorful olive salad, all nestled within a round loaf of Italian bread.
Ingredients: 1 round loaf Italian bread. 1/4 cup olive oil. 6 slices Genoa salami. 6 slices mortadella. 6 slices provolone cheese. 1/2 cup chopped mixed olives kalamata, green, etc.. 1/4 cup chopped roasted red peppers. 1/4 cup chopped pepperoncini. 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley. 2 cloves garlic, minced. 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano. Salt and pepper to taste.
Instructions: Start by heating the oven to 350F 175C. To make a bread bowl, cut off the top of the loaf of bread and hollow out the middle. Use olive oil to coat the inside of the bread bowl. In the bread bowl, arrange the salami, mortadella, and provolone cheese in a layer. Cut up the pepperoncini, olives, roasted red peppers, parsley, garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Put them all in a bowl and mix them together. Spread the olive mixture out evenly on top of the cheese and meat. Put the top back on the loaf of bread and tightly wrap the sandwich in aluminum foil. Put the wrapped sandwich on a baking sheet and heat the oven to 400 degrees. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese melts and the sandwich is warm all the way through. Take it out of the oven and let it cool down a bit before cutting it into wedges. Enjoy while still warm!
