Seven Questions to Ask Before Adding Network Drops to a New Office
A network drop may look like a simple wall outlet, but its location affects desks, phones, wireless access points, printers, security devices and future expansion.
Before installation begins, answer these seven questions:
1. How will each room be used? A private office may need two or three connections, while a meeting room could require connections for a display, conferencing equipment, a room-booking panel and a wireless access point.
2. Will employees use desk phones? Even when computers and phones share a connection, planning sufficient cable capacity provides more flexibility when equipment or layouts change.
3. Where will wireless access points be installed? Good Wi-Fi still depends on properly positioned wired connections. Wireless access points should be planned according to coverage requirements rather than placed wherever an unused outlet happens to exist.
4. Are cameras or access-control devices part of the project? Security cameras, card readers and related equipment may require separate cable routes, network capacity and power considerations.
5. Where will the network rack be located? The telecommunications room should provide suitable space, ventilation, electrical power and access for maintenance.
6. How will the cables be tested and labelled? Each completed run should be identifiable at both ends. Testing records and clear labels make troubleshooting and future expansion considerably easier.
