There’s tons and tons of studies (I’ll eventually find time to link them) on how fiction and music begin to affect daily life. Fiction doesn’t exist in a vacuum. If you see something in fiction and you’re exposed to it enough it begins to settle in as a part of you. Teens who listen to rap music with inherently sexual tones and sexism against women are more likely to be sexist in their actions (I will point out that there is some debate on whether or not people seek out media that conforms to their internal beliefs or if media influences it themself).

Homosexuality, for example, broke into popular media in the last several decades, and has become far more acceptable in the eyes of the American public. Now I’m not saying everyone’s suddenly going to be fine with incest or pedophilia (which aren’t similar to homosexuality in any way besides that they were/are ~taboo~ subjects) but if it’s seen consistently in media without a big NO THIS IS BAD, or even really just seen consistently in media people become more okay with it.
