Commission: Things to Come (1936) is a British science fiction film produced by Alexander Kord and directed by William Cameron Menzie. The film stars Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson, Cedric Hardwick, Pearl Argyl and Margaretta Scott. The cultural historian Christopher Fraylin calls Things to Come "a landmark in cinematic design." The dialogue and plot were devised by H. G. Wells as "a new story" meant to "display" the "social and political forces and possibilities" that he had outlined in 1933 in The Shape of Things to Come, a work he considered less a novel than a "discussion" in fictional form that presented itself as the notes of a 22nd-century diplomat.The film was also influenced by previous works, including his 1897 story "A Story of the Days to Come" and his 1931 work on society and economics, The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankin, speculating on the future had been a stock-in-trade for Wells ever since The Time Machine (1895). Zita Johann (born 14 July 1904 – 20 September 1993) was an Austrian-American actress, best known for her performance in The Mummy (1932), The Sin of Nora Moran (1933) and The Struggle(1931). She was married to Bernard E. Shedd, John McCormick and John Houseman. She died on September 20, 1993 in Nyack, New York, USA. A Banat German, Zita Johann was born Elisabeth Johann in the village of Deutsch Benischek (near Temesvar), Austria-Hungary. Her father, a hussar officer named Stefan Johann, emigrated with his family to the United States in 1911. She debuted on Broadway in 1924 and made her first film appearance in D. W. Griffith's 1931 film The Struggle. After seven films, she quit to work in theater, working with John Houseman, to whom she was married 1929-1933, and with Orson Welles. She also taught acting to people with learning disorders. Johann married three times. She made her last film appearance in the 1986 horror film Raiders of the Living Dead. She died in 1993 at age 89 in Nyack, New York. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered in a stream in upstate New York. Back in the the heady days of the mid 1990’s (when I did comics more regularly) I got to work on an issue of Supreme (Issue 49) written by Alan Moore, penciled by Rick Veitch, letters by Todd Klein and inks by yours truly. Going through some old boxes in my studio turned up copies of Rick’s original pencils and my inks on them. This was one of those rush jobs where I got the eight pages of pencils on Friday afternoon and turned them around for Monday so Fed Ex could get them back to the publisher. FTP sites were still a few years off. Sadly, the printer inserted the wrong frontispiece (from 47 or 48?) and I didn’t receive inking credit until the letters page in issue 50 or 51. I inked these pages primarily with a Hunt 103 quill. Very quickly.
