one of the biggest changes i have made in my life is not to criticise anything based solely on what other people are saying on the internet. is nolan's odyssey good or bad? well, i have to read the book first and understand the source material. then i have to watch the film and form my own opinion. is emily wilson unfair in her criticism of nolan? well i have to read her review not just the pithy extracts on tumblr and see if it's a fair and honest appraisal of his work.
it takes more time but in my opinion it is the bare minimum to really engage with something with intellectual honesty. otherwise you're failing to think critically for yourself.
