Taking a break from #livesessionsunday for a bit, so this week’s belated #newrelease is Lime Cordiale’s new album 14 Steps To A Better You, which is a low key chilled disc that that really fits my recent personal vibe. This kind of beachy surf rock (that doesn’t take a lazy route by playing as boneless white boy reggae) is calming, but not in a patronising way, and it really speaks to the current social mood. Flash Gordon is not a good movie, and apart from Brian Blessed being pretty much himself and Timothy Dalton taking his supporting role wayyy to seriously, the only saving grace is the Queen composed soundtrack. The dialogue is atrocious, the lead performances are more ham than anything else, and the effects work is pretty sketch even for a 1980 production. It sometimes veers into the so bad it’s good territory, but I strongly Red comment giving it a miss. Soundtrack is fun, at least. Something For Kate come back with the chilled grunge vibes in their 2006 album Desert Lights. There isn’t much to say beyond it’s a solid grunge effort; within the band’s comfort zone, but thoroughly competent, and a good addition to their catalog. Arctic Monkeys don’t have a proper live album available to stream, so for this week’s #livesessionsunday I’m doing their 2011 and 2013 iTunes Festival sets. With a cumulative runtime of just over 40 minutes, the sets see the British rockers in their creative prime, so we get effectively a best-of playlist between them. They carry a pretty consistent energy between hem so they loop well into one another, and the recording quality is top notch. CHVRCHES newest album, Love Is Dead, is an appropriate way to end the week. The Scottish alternative outfit have always delivered fantastic tunes (they’re getting a career run soon so I’ll revisit this in that context too), and this maturation and richness in their sound is like a 25 year single malt scotch at this point. I love the blend of alternative rock and electronic layering, and Glaswegian singer Lauren Mayberry is an absolute powerhouse vocalist and lyricist, holding nothing back to deliver a powerful and impassioned through line. Get on this one ASAP, you won’t be disappointed. Highlight tracks include Graffiti, Get Out, Forever, Miracle, and Wonderland. Available on iTunes and Spotify.
