The bottom photo shows a lake freighter alongside the 969 feet long dock in 1977.
Railroad cars full of ore would roll onto the ore dock, offload into chutes that held 20 tons of ore each. The chutes would then drop into position over the open holds of freighters, loading them with ore bound for the steel mills of various midwestern cities.
During its years of operation the structure was used to ship about 122,000 tons of ore. The trestle that brought railroad cars onto the dock was removed in 1978.
