Happy cocoon hatching day to you, @biblicallyaccuratemoth!

TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that the Io Moth (Automeris io) is a moth found in much of North America? This moth has been named after one of Zeus's mortal partners, Io, who is also the namesake of a moon of Jupiter. Males are bright yellow but the females are a brick brown. Both have a large eyespot on each hindwing to help deter predators. Shaking these eye spots is really their only form of defence as adults, but the caterpillars have nasty urticating hairs that protect them. The adult moths only live a couple of weeks at most as they don't have functional mouth parts.

@dweebpheles submitted: Just wanted to show my preserved cicadas I collected from the Brood XIV emergence, and this beetle--I'm unsure of its ID. I found the beetle under a bench at a gas station already deceased, Western NC, USA! You can ID it, if you'd like :)
Also, I found a Giant Leopard Moth, and I saw my first Io Moth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lovely treat to see such a lady on my way to breakfast. When I went inside the building, I got her neat eyespots thru the glass :) And, I found a deceased tulip tree silk moth (I think thats what it is???) In my driveway, so I'm attempting to preserve him, too. Once again, love this blog so much🫶🫶🫶
Some great finds! The cicada display looks nice, RIP friends I hope you all mated so much. The big dead beetle (RIP too) is an eastern rhinoceros beetle. Love the photo of the io moth where you can see her eye spots through the glass! Fancy. And yes I agree the last pal is a tulip tree silkmoth :)
Hii!! I luv your SHH art! Can you draw Gazza Taggit (io moth fursona if can) pls? /nf

Little doodle for a friend :) I was asked to do something with the Io Moth, so I made an Animalia design for it!
They would be little floof monsters.
It seems like their caterpillars are covered in spines that would sting anyone who touched them, so that's pretty cool! I may have the adults be immune to this venom.
Males would be yellow, while females would be reddish brown and even purple.

Best Bug Tourney Round 2 Poll 6
which is the best bug?
Angle candled firefly (Pyractomena angulata)
Io moth (Automeris io)
Angle candled firefly propaganda:
Fireflies are so pretty. This one looks cool. This is the firefly i think of when i think of fireflies.
Io moth propaganda:
They emerge from their cocoons in the late morning or early afternoon, which is relatable. Also, the caterpillars are cool. caterpillar image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ea/Automeris_io_L5_%2841800747600%29.jpg
