One of the cool “inventions” of the 19th century were Geissler's low-pressure gas tubes, very similar to today's neon tubes. They soon became a toy to have at any self-respecting high society party.

Keaton Music Typewriter, Circa 1936
The Keaton Music Typewriter, invented around 1936, revolutionized music publishing. With a specialized keyboard for musical symbols, it allowed for quick and accurate typing of sheet music. This innovation significantly sped up the production process, meeting the high demand for printed music in the 1930s.
A researcher named Wilson Greatbatch was building a machine to record heart sounds when he accidentally used the wrong resistor. The circuit started pulsing like a heartbeat, and that mistake helped create a practical implantable pacemaker that later saved millions of lives worldwide.
Nothing says "I have an unstoppable nicotine addiction" quite like the Cigarette Umbrella. Invented in 1931 by an eccentric British clown named Robert W. Stern, this gadget was exactly what it sounds like. It was a miniature, fully functional umbrella that clamped onto the end of a long cigarette holder, shielding the glowing cherry from raindrops.
While it was a clever piece of micro-engineering, it was completely useless in practice. The tiny umbrella couldn't withstand any wind, the user's face and clothes still got entirely soaked, and the rain simply bounced off the umbrella back onto the cigarette anyway. It was published in a few novelty magazines of the era before quietly fading into the ash-tray of history.
