“Kagome...”

Something that kind of sets me on edge in the anime adaptation of Inuyasha is that one scene in The Final Act (episode 23), where, as Kagome falls from inside Naraku, Inuyasha grabs his falling sword before reaching for Kagome. 

This small detail really takes away from the manga where (in chapter 539), Inuyasha’s demon form reaches for Kagome, without the need to transform back to a half-demon. Him being a demon doesn’t stop him from recognizing her, and trying to protect her first and foremost. I feel like that’s one of the big things that stopped me from enjoying that part of the anime. 

This sequence in the anime shows where the fanfictions which display his demonic form as an alternate being come from. But that’s not right! One big thing about Inuyasha is that he is neither both, or either. He is an enigma in himself, a being outside of the two platforms that feels things differently than either can understand. 

People have this concept that he’s divided, which could not be more untrue! He has differing portions of himself, and experiences varying levels of consciousness and ferality. That doesn’t make him less though, and he is still somewhat in control of his actions, although when his demonic form appears, his demon instincts (which were already there to begin with) become the prioritized knowledge. A really good example of this is artistefishe’s fanfiction Abnormalities, where you can clearly see it’s still Inuyasha, and that he hasn’t really changed.
