How to Cut International Shipping Costs When Sourcing from China?
Logistics is often the biggest hidden cost in importing. Here are practical tips, sorted by urgency:
Non-Urgent: Sea Freight (Lowest cost, longer transit)
If your shipment doesn't fill a container or pallet:
·Use LCL (Less than Container Load): Book through your forwarder and get billed by volume rather than shipping a full container.
·Consolidate with peers: Split costs with others shipping to the same destination port.
Urgent: Air Freight / Courier
1. Air Freight vs. Courier: Air freight = airline + local last-mile delivery. Faster than sea, cheaper than DHL/FedEx/UPS
2. Compare 3 Quotes:Â Always check prices from your own forwarder, your supplier's forwarder, and a local courier company.
3. Leverage Courier Tiers:Â Choose slower options when timeline permits (e.g., FedEx IE at 7Â - 10 days instead of IP at 5Â -7 days). Regular importers should open a direct corporate account to negotiate volume discounts.
4. Use Envelope Rates:Â Some countries allow small items to be shipped in branded courier envelopes at a significantly lower rate. Check with courier before shipment.
5. Ship from Hong Kong: Couriers like UPS, FedEx and DHL sometimes are cheaper out of Hong Kong than from mainland China
Note:Â FedEx/DHL in China do not offer envelope rates; items packed in envelopes are still charged as regular parcels.
