I can count on one hand the number of interiors I’ve painted over the years. It’s just never interested me much as a subject. But looking at Matisse still lifes helped me to see how he used interiors to engage with pattern and color, and how his flattening of the space made the paintings seem more like very hip collages than traditional interiors. So I decided to try it. This is not at all the kind of painting I had in mind, but you gotta start somewhere. I can tell already that this is going to be a real learning experience. I’m going to go through old photos and paint some of the lovely places we’ve stayed over many years of travel. Seems appropriate for a winter of living indoors and only imagining travel? Anyway, this is a gorgeous apartment in Langres, France. The owner, an antiques dealer, lives upstairs and he let us have the run of his gorgeous back garden while we were there. It had a minuscule kitchen that led out to that pretty garden, perfect for a couple of non-cooks who were happy to live off bread, wine, and bits of this and that from the local deli counters and farmers market. If you’ve read this far...I would love your suggestions of artists who paint fabulous interiors, particularly in a mixed media style. . . . #interiors #interiorpainting #interiorpaintings #gouachepainting #gouacheart #gouacheillustration #paintinginterior #travelpainting #markthistime2020 (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHqd7aMHSlR/?igshid=a61plmc1b5r
