And like maybe the daughter has to go to like spend the summer at Tom and Maddie's because of the divorce?

Description: Your parents divorce really hit you hard. Luckily, you had your aunt Maddie and uncle Tom to take care of you while the divorce was getting settled. But, being a pretty young kid, you were rather prone to sickness. But, little did you know you’d get an unlikely protector while you got better.

The ride to your uncle Tom’s house was a rough one this year.

You visited every so often, but this year was the year your parents were finalizing their divorce.

And, with you being only ten years old, you would have to pick a parent to live with.

So, your parents are letting you have a whole summer to decide who you want to stay with.

And you’re not happy about it.

At least Ozzy will be happy to see you…

As you leave your mom’s car with your backpack, sniffling a little bit, and with your mom talking with your uncle, you see a little flash of black come from near the house.

Curious, you head towards it, looking around the house, you spot the blur again. But before you can approach…

“[Name]! Come say goodbye to your mom!” your uncle yells.

“Coming!” you yell back, turning around. You peer back one last time before going back to your mom.

After the goodbyes and everything, your uncle takes you inside, and you hear the sound of your mom driving off. Ozzy greets you at the door, licking your face with his tail wagging, causing you to giggle.

“Hi to you too Ozzy!”

“Now, before you set down your stuff, we have a surprise for you,” your uncle states.

“A surprise?”

“Yeah! I think you’ll like this surprise,” your aunt Maddie says.

You were skeptical, but you nodded your head anyway.

“Boys! Come down and say hi to [Name]!”

You tilt your head to the side, confused. Did they have kids? Do you have cousins?

You hear the attic door open, and boy, were you not prepared.

In front of you, there are four anthropomorphic animals, two are hedgehogs (one black-and-red, one blue), one is a red echidna, and one is an orange fox.

“Oh my gosh! You must be [Name]! I’m Tails! It’s so nice to meet you!” the fox says, shaking your hand.

“Nice to meet you too,” you mutter.

“[Name], these are our boys, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow,” Maddie says, gesturing towards the blue hedgehog, Tails, the red echidna, and the black-and-red hedgehog respectively. “Boys, this is [Name], your cousin.”

“Tom has a brother?!” Sonic asks.

“Is it really that surprising?-” Tom mutters.

“Now, you four, [Name] is going to be spending the summer here with us, okay?” Maddie says. “So that means no roughhousing, and definitely no ring shenanigans.”

“Ring shenanigans…?” you ask under your breath, with nobody hearing you.

“Of course, mother! We will ensure this is [Name]’s best experience here!” Knuckles states, patting his chest with his large fist.

“C’mon, [Name]! We’ll show you our room!” Sonic says, taking your hand, dragging you along. You look back at your aunt and uncle, with Maddie waving at you and Tom giving you a thumbs-up as you let out a sigh.

You get led up to the attic, which has been transformed since the last time you were at your uncle’s house, with your cousins(?) following behind you.

There are now five beds along the wall, one is a red racecar, one is orange, one is red, one is black, and the last is turquoise. In the corner there’s a large pillow fort, along with a small TV.

“That’s Shadow’s fort. It’s a huuuuge deal if he lets you in it,” Sonic states.

“It does look comfy…” you mutter.

“Hey! Mom! Dad! Where is [Name] sleeping?!” Sonic yells down the ladder, and you see Shadow slightly flinch from it, but you don’t comment on it.

“There should be an extra bed up there for her!” Maddie yells back.

“Kay! Thanks!”

“That must be where the extra bed came from…” Tails mutters.

“Anyway! Let’s have a fun summer!” Sonic exclaims.

And it was good, at least for a while.

At the moment, you’re upstairs, laying in your bed, feeling like absolute garbage.

Your stomach feels gross, you feel light-headed, and everything feels warm.

“[Name]! Come on down for breakfast!” Maddie shouts up the ladder. You turn over on your side, pulling your blanket over your head. “[Name]?" Maddie comes up the ladder, a worried expression on her face. “[Name], what’s wrong?”

“I feel gross,” you mutter.

She pulls the blanket off of your head, putting the back of her hand on your forehead. “You’re burning up…Stay right here, I’ll get you more blankets and a bucket.”

“Thanks auntie…”

Maddie heads back down the stairs with a worried expression on her face. “Kids?”

Sonic zooms over to her. “What’s up, mom?”

“[Name] is sick, can you go bring me the bucket?”

“[Name]’s sick?” Tails asks worriedly.

“She’s got a fever,” Maddie starts. “She most likely has the flu.”

“Then it is our duty as cousins to protect [Name] until she is better!” Knuckles states.

“That’s so sweet of you, Knuckles.” Maddie clears her throat. “Alright you four. I’m tasking you all with helping [Name] feel comfortable while she gets better.” Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all salute, with Shadow just sighing. “Sonic, you go get her a ton of blankets. She’ll need to sweat out her fever.”

“Got it!” Sonic zooms off.

“Tails, you go get the thermometer and the bucket.”

“I’m on it!” Tails runs off in a different direction.

“Knuckles, you get [Name] some extra pillows. We want her to be cozy.”

“Say no more!” Knuckles also rushes off.

“And Shadow?”

“Hm?”

“…Go check on [Name] for me, will you? I still have to get ready for work, and I trust you and the boys to take care of her.”

Shadow pauses for a moment before nodding. “I won’t let you down.”

Maddie gives him a smile. “Thank you.”

Shadow goes over to the ladder to the attic, starting to move up it before hearing you cough, causing his breath to hitch.

He climbs all the way up, and your coughing becomes more frantic, with you coughing into your arm.

Shadow’s fists clench slightly, his ears pinning to the back of his head as his mouth forms into a frown.

Maria used to cough like that on her worst days.

What if your sickness never left?

What if you would leave him, too?

Shadow quickly shakes his head, getting the negative thoughts out of his head.

He needs to focus.

“O…Oh, hey Shadow,” you mutter. “What are you doing up here?”

“Maddie asked me to check on you,” he mutters. “How are you feeling?”

“Icky…My stomach feels like it’s doing backflips.”

He takes off one of his gloves and does the same thing Maddie did, checking your temperature. “Maddie was right. You have a fever.”

“Yeah…I guess I got the flu.” You gaze at Shadow’s gloveless paw, enamoured by how fluffy it looks. “Can I hold your paw?”

“What?”

“Your paw looks really fluffy.”

“I-” He sees your pleading face, causing him to sigh through his nose. “…Fine.”

You gently take his paw with both of your hands, before putting it on your face, causing Shadow to look away, embarrassed. “Waaaarm…”

“…C’mon. You’ll be warmer in my fort.”

“You’re letting me in your fort?!”

“Don’t tell the others. I’ve…only ever let Sonic in. He’ll never let me hear the end of it.”

“My lips are sealed.”

He pulls you off of the bed, your blanket around your shoulders, and he leads you into the pillow/blanket fort, sitting down, dragging you down with him.

“…My old friend used to sit in a blanket fort with me whenever she was unwell. I…hope this makes you feel better, too.”

Your eyes soften, and you give Shadow a sad smile.

“Thank you, Shadow,” you say, leaning against his shoulder. “I’m glad to call you my friend.”

Shadow’s mouth upturns into a small smile. “Go back to sleep. You’ll need the rest to get better.”
