When we contemplate our dream jobs, being an entrepreneur in the world of handbags is pretty high on the list. But if we couldn’t work in fashion for a living, we’d covet the career of Michelle Turnbull Reeves, founder of cult favorite wine producer David Family Wines.

At first glance, one might wonder what winemaking and handbags have in common, but in reality, the two products are very similar. Used by many and understood by few, great wines and great handbags are dedicated to the similar values of impeccable craftsmanship, product continuity, creative luxury marketing and, when successful, dedicated followings.

Since launching David Family Wines in 2007, Reeves has helped the line skyrocket in prestige amongst the “who’s who” of the wine and jetset worlds. What’s even better? She’s made a sterling reputation on just a single product – Pinot Noir – and developed a packaging that is as high quality as it is aesthetically pleasing.

The success speaks for itself; the first release sold out in just four months.

Edward Gerard, Wine Director of luxury concierge group Quintessentially, called it his “find of the year and a wine destined to become a cult classic once word gets out.”

From a design standpoint, we can’t help but love Reeves’ commitment to providing a “complete sensory experience.” The packaging is unparalleled, the only in the industry to use meticulously hand-crafted Spanish leather labels along with hand-numbered bottles. Each piece, retailing in the $60-$90 range, is a collectible item. Fans range from Lydnon Lee, former owner of Jimmy Choo, to Sugar Ray Leonard and  Tori Spelling.

Reeves and David Family Wines have also mastered the art of community engagement, donating a portion of proceeds from each bottle to Habitat for Humanity. Want to know more? When we travel, sometimes we feel like Atlas – carrying the entire world with us on a journey. A vital part of your handbag collection are the bags you take with you on the road (and your Core, of course).

Particularly in today’s age of charge-per-piece air travel, it’s important to find a stylish and relatively light tote that can carry your most important essentials. In our case, that’s a passport, notebook,  iPad, Kindle, iPhone, cell phone, camera, make-up and all the moisturizers that will make the flight more pleasant on our skin.

Consider that a travel handbag should resist the hardship of the flight (including sometimes traveling on the floor of the plane) and look good no matter what.

The one downside? Most of these great totes lack interior compartments for your in-flight needs, making your Core an essential add-on to your travel regime.

We often travel with a tote because it’s easy to carry and stuff full for the flight, but also to empty out and carry during the day while on vacation or out on business.  Slip in your iPad or PC and a folio, and off you go to a meeting. Put a towel and a sunscreen in your bag and take it to the beach, slide a bottle of water inside as you head off for a day of shopping, or load it up with your favorite camera and head out for a day of sightseeing. The detachable pocket on some of these bags is great to hold your phone or another essential as well.

Our favorites:

Goyard St. Louis PM Tote This red number is one of our favorites because of its rich color. A simple pattern that isn’t instantly screaming “designer,” we can’t help but love the simplicity of this perfectly easy bag.

Gucci “Craft” Tote This is one of our favorite “basics” from luxe line Gucci. Plus, a black bag is a must-have for any occasion — it will allow your travel wardrobe to “pop”!

Louis Vuitton Totally Mongram GM Tote Vuitton is a go-to because of its neutral color (brown goes with everything) but also because of its high-quality craftsmanship and amazingly durable canvas. We’ve had some of our Vuittons for more than a decade, and they still look as good as new.

Another advantage: most of these travel totes have matching luggage!

Of the many bags we’re coveting for Fall, the Bottega Veneta Large Hobo ($3,250) has to be near the top of our list. The ultra roomy bag has a luxe lining of leather and suede, a totally touchable exterior of butter-soft leather, and a convenient top handle that would allow us to carry both over the shoulder and on our elbow.

Oh, and while we wish we could say we loved this bag for entirely objective reasons ... it just so happens to be the same color as our Tuscany Core. Anyone for a matching accessories purchase?
