One thing about Moroccans, they love their pomegranates and pomegranate juice. I have never seen a place that prides itself so much on this fruit (though I have seen this done for a vegetable - ie. Turkey with corn 🌽). From the city streets to the mountain regions, if you are in Morocco and you see a pomegranate vendor, pick up a drink! The past few months have been ridiculously busy for me. I have found myself involved in so many projects, that I often just feel like I’m going, going nonstop. In the midst of finding balance between my professional and personal life, I’ve had moments when I have had to step back and just….exhale. You spend all day just holding your breath through work and life, that you easily forget to let it out - you forget to just breathe. Lately, my spiritual and meditative practices have ramped up. I’ve created opportunities of calmness for myself that begin with a nightly routine and end with a morning routine. It’s so important to start your day on the right footing. Preparing yourself mentally and spiritually sets the tone for the day. Most importantly, awareness that at the end of it all, you’ve got this. ❤️ I am not sure who needs to read this, but know in both chaotic and tranquil times, there is the choice of peace of mind. Of all the places in Morocco that I had learned of, Fez was one in which I had read and heard conflicting reviews. Without getting into much detail, I was stressed about almost everything - what I would be wearing, where I would be staying, how late I could be out, etc. Before even getting there, I made sure to arrange a guide for a one-day tour. I wanted to be mentally prepared for what I might encounter. ………………….. I was paired with one of the best guides in Fez. I had an entire list of things I wanted to see, and he made sure I covered ground and then some. I could not have had a better first day in Fez. Interestingly, the day we toured was also a day in which many shops in the medina were already closed. I know for some that might take away from the excitement of the bustling medina, but for me it was about comfortability. I knew I would be there for a few days, but taking the Fez medina in at a more subdued level helped tremendously. ………………….. However, in the end, I learned that I should have never prejudged this region, and instead just have been open minded. Fez and it’s people were ridiculously kind to me. There were moments I really felt badly about having preconceived notions of this place. My personal experience was not at all what I had expected. Solo traveling through Morocco, or any country for that matter, can have its challenges. One of the most deafening reasons for this is often due to language barriers. English is a universal language that holds a strong baring all over the world, but naturally it is not native to most countries. As someone who speaks multiple languages with various levels of fluency, I won’t lie that it has come in quite handy for me while traveling. For this trip, I found myself heavily depending on my French and Spanish. Oddly enough, it depended on the type of Moroccan individual I encountered. This really blew my mind. You can get by speaking to most Moroccans in French, English, and Arabic. The later can be broken down, as Moroccans can speak both standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic, otherwise known as Darija. Interestingly though, I countered two subsets of Moroccans with very vast language skills. These were : the Berbers and the Nomads. I cannot even begin to tell you how many languages they likely know, but I can say I was highly impressed watching them code-switch with tourists from various countries. …………………………… But let’s be honest, not everyone has a knack for languages, and that is completely ok! We live in a day and age where phone apps have become game changers in travel! ⚡️ Pro Tips: Here are a few of my favorites: 1. Google Translate 2. Microsoft Translator 3. iTranslate 4. TripLingo What’s great about these is that they also have an offline feature and support both iOS and Android.
